In Win7x64, Google email in the form of HTML source becomes mangled in Office Outlook (which I've substituted for incompatible Outlook Express).

To replace Outlook Express, I first tried Thunderbird, and then Eudora. Only Office Outlook, which is part of MS Office, had all the functions and options of Outlook Express that I like, plus formatting and organization features.

I could use Web Mail with Gmail or ATT-Yahoo, to which I have access, but I prefer getting my mail to my PC and keeping it there.

You failed to mention Windows Live Mail which is Microsoft's free replacement for Outlook Express for Windows 7: Windows Live Essentials 2011 - Download free Microsoft programs The web installer for Live Essentials will let you download just "Mail" if that's all you need for now. You can always go back to the install file to download other parts of the suite when you want.

Not good!

If he has tried Thunderbird then he would not like Live Mail. That is for sure!

The OP said he did try Thunderbird but it lacked some features of Outlook Express. WLM includes most features of OE (except for the unified inbox for which "Quick Views" is a poor substitute).
