Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me here and I'll be able to follow your instructions (running Windows 7 64-bit). I'm getting a Code 57A error when trying to install the Security Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2687276) 32-Bit Edition.

I've ran the SURT tool, SFC Scan (no issues) and even tried downloading the update from Microsoft website and ran as Administrator but still no go... hopefully it's something simple.

Ok it now appears I can't do any Microsoft Office 2010 Security updates as it won't install the new Service Pack 2 update for Office 2010 either.

I even tried removing Office using all these steps How to uninstall or remove Microsoft Office 2010 suites - support - Office.com except "Manually" but I would get errors and it would only partially uninstall with the end result Office wouldn't even work... I tried reinstalling but it still left it unusable.

A few months ago I had this same problem of Office not installing updates (after a certain point) and I tried uninstalling with the same results of it being unusable. I had to do a Windows 7 Clean Install and reinstalled Office and it handled security updates fine up until these last two updates. Apparently after a certain number of Office updates on my computer something goes wrong.

Now I learned my lesson from last time so I created a System Image before I tried to uninstall Office just in case it left it unusable (and it did) so I just got done restoring the Image... Office works fine again except it can't do security updates.

Can anyone help me, or will tom982 help me when he gets back? What does Microsoft tech support cost and how likely would they be able fix what's wrong?

Interesting
The SFC and CheckSUR results are clear, but there is one major error present in the background CBS log (repeated a number of times).

It looks to me as if the file is incorrect - it's a different size from the one I have.
What surprises me is that CheckSUR hasn't picked it up.
I'll have to work out a way to force the proper version in so that it still works properly.

If you haven't heard by Tuesday evening, SHOUT! :)

Let's see if this works....

I've uploaded a file - mccaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\mccaa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\mccaa
or
DIR E:\mccaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\mccaa <drive>:\windows\servicing\packages /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

Great - the SFC scan is clear now
Please now run another CheckSUR scan to confirm that Windows isn't going to complain, and post the result.

Dang same old thing the only thing difference is it's decided it doesn't need the other update it has been trying to install just the SP2 for Microsoft Office 2013.

Is this a Windows issue or an Office issue?

I think it's an Office issue :)
Most of the time, such issues are caused by the failure of the MSOCache system - often because the system cannot access it because it's been deleted to free disk space

I would suggest re-posting the current Office problem in a specialist Office forum - either here in Sevenforums, or at MS's Office Community forums....

Noel just wanted to update that I finally got the update to install it was a Permissions issue but don't know why all of a sudden that was a problem. Found the solution it was contained in one of the other numerous questions on this same error. Simply run the command:

"secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose"

and that took care of the problem in a few seconds!

Just wanted to add it still may not have worked had you not gotten rid of my other errors. Thanks again!
