Solved Window Movement and Graphics suddenly stilted/sluggish

I did an AVG PC Analyzer and was playing a game and then sometime in the past couple of hours all windows and rendering got sluggish. When I drag a window it looks stilted. Also in games, rendering happens in short burts. Almost undectable, but to me, unbearably annoying.

I checked process tree and rebooted and turned off any background processes and it still seems that way.

It's an overall weird system performance thing that would occur if a moderately cpu intensive process was operating in the background.

concerned might be virus but I have avast AND avg.

Thanks

AVG uses a resident scanner which can be problematic at times. It can be disabled. You may want to monitor the Processes and see what is using up the most CPU, when it happens.

Hi. John.

First step, you might want to remove one of those two AV first.
And then observe how it goes.

Hey, I will deactivate AVG. That hopefully will solve things.

Another odd phenomenon is I installed windows 2007 about 1.5 wks ago. But in "Uninstall a Program" it says it was installed yesterday???!?

The screen stutters about every 5-6 seconds for about half a second, so it's "almost" undetectable, but for me, detectable enough that it makes gaming (and a few other other things and tasks) almost agitatingly burdensome.

This is one of my few gripes with windows OS, the sluggish (or in this case stuttering) performance that sometimes pops up and it's difficult to diagnose what causes it.

My previous solution was reformatting the hard disk and reinstalling everythign. While that works, it's time-consuming and wretchedly annoying, plus, I don't have time to do that at present.

this is somewhat related...(esp. if this stuttering performance effect is caused by anti-virus).

What's anyone's take on
avast
avg
norton 360.

i have free versions of the first two. But plan on investing in the 360. I basically just need an anti-virus program that is comprehensive and that doesn't cause performance problems. If the anti-virus program causes performance problems, it's in a way almost as bad as a virus.

Hey mates, I fully uninstalled AVG. (hate to use remover app). I still have avast, but feel now exposed to virii, which is unnerving. I will look into norton 360. I can't stand apps that interfere with performance.

That seemed to have helped a LOT. Moving windows doesn't have the same stilted effect. I'm still on alert and it seems like it happens on occasion, but probably all gone or mostly gone.

Hi John.
Good to hear your PC gained better performance. About anti virus, it is completely wise to have only single AV on each PC. Having more than one would cause conflict, and just imagine of both AV are running routine check and scan. Feel exposed is a good sign for being aware of any thread. My philosophy is that have AV in my PC is important, But being cautious in doing things is the first key to security.
