Windows 7 64-bit corrupt file system

Have an old dual-core 64-bit processor, so I though I'd go with 64-bit this time. Installed the 64-bit RC I got directly from MS, install went OK.

But then ...

Tried to install 64-bit video (ATI) and audio drivers. In both cases, got an error message about the file system being corrupted and being unable to read the files.

Tried the driver installs again after using Vista to copy the files to external USB stick. Same error message.

Tried using Seven to copy the driver installs to the local disk and install from there, Said it couldn't write to the local disk.

So ...

Erased the partition, installed the 32-bit instead. All the drivers and files work OK.

Is this a general problem with the 64-bit RC? I really wanted to try the 64-bit version, but I'd rather have 32-bit that works than 64-bit that doesn't.

And BTW, my audio and video cards are three years old, there are no Windows 7 drivers for them (nor will there be), so I'm using Vista drivers. Could that be the problem? (The 32-bit Vista drivers work with no problem).

OK ...

Audio is Bluegears B-Enspirer. Last drivers (Vista) came out in 2008, for both 32 and 64 bit. Able to get the drivers to load OK in 32-bit.

Video is ATI X1600. Not supported by Catalyst 9.4; last supported in 9.3 -- again, that's for Vista, not for Windows 7. Am using generic drivers. Haven't attempted to load these.

This post wasn't really about drivers, it was about file system corruption with 64-bit RC ... but .. regarding the drivers:

Got word back from Bluegears that the C-Media chip has been discontinued, so they won't be writing any Windows Seven drivers for it.

Guess these vendors expect us to replace our hardware every 2-3 years ... and then they wonder why we don't buy $200 sound cards or $400 video cards!

I installed the drivers for my b-enspirer in Win7 x64 and the audio works fine, but if I try to load the control panel (Oxygen HD Audio, it's called) the system locks up.

I bought this sound card just one year ago for Vista, what a bunch of crap. Never supporting that company again...
