Windows 7 64 Bit very random freezing at wit's end!

I too am experiencing random freezes in windows 7 64 bit. Sometimes it would freeze right on start-up, other times after half hour, or just won't freeze at all. When I play games it seems to behave itself. I took out my old ram (4g dual channel ballistix tracers 1g in each slot) and installed new patriot RAm ddr2 1066 4 x 2 gb each slot. I did a driver sweeper/cleaner and fresh installed drivers for my ATI HIS HD 4870 1gb video card. I can't seem to find the c:\windows\minidump\memory.dmp file to upload for you all to inspect, even a search won't bring it up. The issue i see most is this:

Every time I freeze I have to hard restart the computer, mouse stops responding and the whole system locks up, I try to push the power button to see if it would shutdown yet it may blink but is then completely unresponsive. I've searched and searched all threads yet there's nothing at all I can find. I also did a sfc /scannow in CMD run with admin and no file integrity issues were found. I'm really at my wits end!!

Usually a .dmp file won't be created with a system freeze like you are seeing.

It's important that you set up your new memory's voltage and timings to manufacture specs in bios. I'm not sure what your exact type of patriot memory is but the standard settings for DDR2 is 5 5 5 15 2t @ 2.1 volts.

You should make sure the memory settings are correct in bios. To support all 8GB you might have to bump up the memory voltage and northbridge voltage a bit, sometimes lowering the timings helps also. The divider you are using also has an effect so it's important to use the correct divider for the FSB you are using.

I can set the voltage so that it is not "auto" but as far as the timing, the settings elude me. Where would I go to bump up the memory voltage and the northbridge voltage a bit? Also I'm not quite sure what you mean by lowering the timings and using the correct divider for the FSB. I bought this computer from a friend so I didn't put all the parts together, but the BIOS is updated to the latest version from MSI. I also ran prime95 to stress test the cores to see if any were going bad, but after 6 hours of heavy testing no errors were detected. Do you think it is the RAM voltage? Thanks.

Same problem

Hello Folks

I have exactly the same problem. Brand new system 1 week old which freezes every few minute for no reason. All hardware and software was checked for campatability and was installed as per spec.

When the system freezes the mouse cursor still moves but scrollover highlighting and being able to click on a window does nothing. Push Ctrl Alt Del and startup the task manager then just exit it again and all is well.

Microsoft says it could be norton but I am running 2010 which is supposed to be fully compatable?

Please help.

You can perform all those memory adjustments in bios. This is standard procedure for setting up memory on a new board. Nothing new or difficult about it.

Had the same problem with my brothers new computer out of the box freezing up. when I did a clean re-install of Windows 7 home premium (x86) from the DVD that came with his computer, his computer now works flawlessly. Bad image install from the computer manufacturer was the issue.

Uninstalled my Razer apps for my keyboard and mouse yesterday. It seems to have made a difference, will keep the site posted as it progresses.

Believe it or not I actually solved my problem today. First and foremost with the MSI motherboard, it is extremely difficult to set the CAS settings to the right RAM speed, i read through many forums on how to do it but with this particular bios running my RAM at 1066 is not possible, even with setting correct voltage, so I just left the RAM the way it is running at 800. I spent over an hour trying to get it to run at 1066 but either it just reset itself when i save settings and exit bios or fail to load at all just get a black screen.

THE FIX!!!
Apparently one of the cores in my quad core phenom 9500 went bad, today i bought and installed a phenom x4 deneb 965 3.4ghz quad-core and the system now SCREAMS!! Getting solid 60 FPS MAX settings left 4 dead 2, and between 80-150 FPS in world of warcraft mid and high settings with an ATI 4870 1gig video card. That's how I fixed my system, it was all hardware, ironically the core failed same time I installed windows 7 which made me think it was a driver or RAM issue. Check into your CPU if there are issues.
