Do windows 7 64 bit uses more ram than windows 7 32 bits? Do i see performance degradation if i upgrade to windows 7 64 bit?

The 64-bit versions can address more memory than the 32-bit versions (in other words, the 4GB memory address space limit, which includes I/O devices, is removed). You are effectively limited to the memory capacity of your motherboard. As for upgrading, this is not possible, sorry. When going from 32-bit to 64-bit (or vice-versa), it needs to be a clean install due to the different architecture involved. I myself have not noticed any difference performance wise between 32-bit and 64-bit.

if you have more than 4G RAM - you will notice the difference.. 64-bit runs smoother..

I'd be inclined to disagree. For a while me and my buddy had the exact same system only his was 32 bit and mine 64. I could see no difference what so ever.

Edit:

How so? I'm not saying your wrong, but I've never seen my RAM usage go over 2 1/2GB. I mean, when you see systems that have like 6 or 8GB do they ever get the use out of it?

Turns out that too much free memory is not a good thing. Unused memory is wasted memory today (since Vista).

That said, too little is not good either. Monitor your memory use and buy memory sizes accordingly.

Do windows 7 64 bit uses more ram than windows 7 32 bits?
Yes, the code is a bit bigger and takes more space in memory. In addition, the installation on the hard drive is a bit bigger as well due to having to have the 64-bit support and the backward support to 32-bit.

Do i see performance degradation if i upgrade to windows 7 64 bit?
It's unlikely, unless you have a very small amount of RAM. At the same time, you likely won't see much performance gain either....

I'll throw my hat in on the side of "smoother". My laptop system (with W7 Ultimate 64-bit) alongside my office development box running W7 Ultimate 32-bit definitely has a smoother "feel" to it. 64-bit (once things are cached up, that is) just "clicks".

Let's put it this way...when I'm running my 3d software, THEN I notice the jump in performance from 64-bit with 6GB memory from 32-bit with 4GB.

the most important thing to remember is there are 32 more bits in 64 bit , bits of what im not sure , in my pc its bits of biscuit my 3 year old has rammed into my new blueray drive. Im currently benchmarking to see if the custard creams are having any effect on my ingame framerate

ill report back asap

whats a VHS player?? is that like a blueray drive that takes huge cassette type things ;)

on a side note when we had out first child we bought a set of safety clip things for the kitched cupboards (it was a clip you had to undo before you could open the doors properly a child safety thing) it came with various othe things one of which was a security type shutter for your vhs video player , it clipped into the hole nd could be locked so your kids couldnt put their toast in it , im thinking that set of child safety security items had been on the shelf for a very very long time :p

i have a friend with a desktop the same as mine cause we both went and bought 1 but recently he put win 7 ultimate 32 bit meanwhile i got 64 bit and i upgraded my RAM to 8 GB so i went to check his out it was the same as mine but i realised on his he could run 6 programs at the same time but any more it freezes but mine i can run more than 15 without it freezing so my conclusion is that 64 bit runs more smoothly because IT HAS THE POWER
