Hi to all! I'm desperated, have searched through thousand of forums with similar problems but haven't been able to find an answer.

I bought a new computer with this specs:
- CORE: i7 2'67GHz
- RAM: 12GB DDR3
- VIDEO: ATI RADEON HD 5970
- MB: ASUS RAMPAGE 3 EXTREME
And, after hesitating about its possible incompatibilities with some software, i decided to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.
Installed all drivers, everything seems to work smooth. ATI drivers were downloaded first from their website so i have the newest ones.
I installed my COD Modern Warfare 2 game (and after this, last version of DirectX) to try my new machine and oops. Game loads ok, mission starts ok (so i get to play it for a few seconds) but then all of a suddend the screen goes black and lots of vertical lines appear. It keeps frozen like that for like 10 seconds and then reboot.
Here is the dump i found:

Here it goes, let me know if you need anything else.

Regarding the drivers, i did that. To the point that i couldnt uninstall the damn catalyst thing and i had to do a system restore point to the very beginning (no big deal, i had been installing software for one hour or so) to get rid of it and then install a fresh copy of *only drivers* downloaded from the ATI website.

The dmp points to your graphics driver, as expected. I see it's pretty new, dated Tue May 19 13:56:59 2009.

Try installing an older driver.

I wish it had worked... but no luck :(

First of all i uninstalled my current new drivers and installed the ones that came with my card. Then i got the first dump.
Then i uninstalled it too and start downloading and trying older ones from the website, starting from Catalyst 9.3 3/18/2009. But it didn't work as if it was even older than my video card so Win 7 didn't install/accept the controllers.
Uninstalled it and kept trying until
Catalyst 10.1 1/27/2010 worked. So i fired up the game and... crash, that's the second dump.

This is consuming my energy! Why so many problems? Is it because of the 64bit OS?

I hope you can help me. Thank you.

The dmp obviously blames your card drivers, but I wonder if the card itself is faulty. Could you do a clean install? If the problem persists and playing around with different drivers doesn't work, buy a new card.

I did a clean install since the beginning. Since i ended up fighting against catalyst which didn't want to uninstall i recovered the system to where it was just after installing motherboard drivers so i could start from 0 with the video card drivers.

So my new video card is defective? :(
Nothing to do with Win7 64bit support or something?

The card is definitely compatible with x64. If you can RMA or return the card, I suggest that you do.

Ok, i removed it and plugged back in my old nvidia 8600GT. I didn't need to install its drivers, windows took care of it and since it's temporal i won't mind installing the fresh ones.
Everything works now, so i can surely discard it's not the game's fault.

I expect to have the ATI changed today or tomorrow, will plug it in and tell you how it went.

Thank you.

This is unveliabable. I just changed my video card in the store, they said they didn't have ATI radeon hd5970 anymore but they said asus eah5970 was the same thing so i took it.
Went home, plug it in... motherboard beeping there was no VGA, WHAT?!

Tomorrow another visit to the store...

Hi j0ker,

Sorry if this seems obvious, but did you remember to plug in the power connectors on your new card?

The few times I've had a motherboard beep at me were because I forgot to hook the PCI-E power cables up to the video card.

Cheers,
John

Actually, the main problem seems to be related to your advise. I did connect ONE cable in the asus eah5970 (because it only comes with one), but today i went to the store and they made it work.
Seeminglesly my power supply unit is not powerful enough (600W, i kinda expected it) so i bought a 850W.

I'll try later and will see if it solves all.

Thank you.
