If I make a partition on my 500gb hdd (D for example) and format it as HFS+ and then change my BIOS settings so that D boots before my main C drive which is currently running Windows 7, and pop in an install disk for Mac OS X will it install normally with the .dmg file format? Or will I still have to find a way to convert the .dmg file still? I would like to have my computer dual booted so I can run either OS at any given time.

No i dont think that will work to well i used iAtkos v7 it is a 3.5gb .iso then used poweriso to burn to dvd and ran the installation, you need to format it using the mac osx disk utility so make a partition then run iatkos and disk utility to format it in guid extended it will then install lepard os and then you will need to repair windows startup you should be good to go there are a few other little things that need to be done i followed this tutorial http://www.windows7hacker.com/index.php/2010/04/how-to-dual-boot-mac-os-x-and-windows-7-complete-work-through/ and then youtube for a step by step with the steps i missed.
hope this helps
