Windows 7 advice for possible Windows 10 installation

I purchased this Dell Inspiron notebook/laptop to run 1 piece of software.
When i received it the previous owner had kind of installed Windows 10 but didnt make a good job of it so i reverted back to Windows 7

My question is that this software provider has informed Windows 7 users that Windows 7 will no longer be supported to run there cloud software & advise before the day comes to install Windows 10

How do i now go about installing Window 10 as i have no disc etc.

The alternative is a clean install. You can make a bootable install usb with this tutorial:

Simply got https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 hit update now and it will do it all for you if it asks for a key skip it should activate from MS

No, you can't do that I'm afraid. The 'Update Now' option will not be displayed if you visit that page with a Windows 7 or a Windows 8.1 machine. It's only seen if you visit with a W10 machine.


For those machines the only available option is to download the Media Creation Tool, which is what the Ten Forums 'upgrade 7 to 10' tutorial uses.

The Media Creation Tool has two options, to 'Upgrade this PC now' or to 'Make install media for another machine...' which can make the install usb for you.

If you take the first option and upgrade this pc now then you will not be asked for a key. If the existing Windows 7 is activated that will mean the Windows 10 will be too. This would be my recommended option as it keeps all your installed software. It is also the preferred option for a W7 machine that has never been upgraded to W10, as it will give the machine a digital licence for Windows 10.

If you make the USB media and use that to do a clean install you will be asked for a key. But as you say "When i received it the previous owner had kind of installed Windows 10...". If that W10 was activated then this PC has a permanent digital licence for the edition that was installed (Home or Pro) stored on Microsoft's activation servers and linked to the unique hardware ID of the PC.

You can click 'I don't have one' when asked for a key. As long as you install the same edition as it had before, then W10 will activate from the existing digital licence as soon as it can contact the activation servers.

Hi,
Ive done the update which took a couple of hours which was fine.
I now haveno sound.

Driver for the 2 audio items under sound have the latest installed.
I run the trouble shooter but no joy.

Ive spent at least 4 hours this afternoon searching & running different tasks from internet advice but still no sound.

I think i used services.msc and had to stop change to automatic then start etc but still the same.


How can i check if my Audio item installed in Windows 10 compatible or would it just not update etc.

Just looking for answers as stumped on what to do next.

looking at the screenshot,

Audio has been user dissabled

All you need to do is left click on the sound icon with the X on it,
it will bring up another little window, user the slider, (wheel on mouse) to select volume level required, that will remove the x on the speaker icon

Windows security is also showing a notification, check it

Open Device Manager. Click on Start then type device manager to find it.

Under 'Sound, video and games controllers' are there any yellow triangles? If so, right-click on any device with the warning triangle and select Update Driver.

Well after say 7 hours of head scratching i came across the below items which ive done & the pending updates strted to download & then install.
I then checked the sound icon which didnt have the extra logo on it.
I then started to play some music & all working fine now.

net stop bits
net stop msiserver
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver
net localgroup administrators networkservice /add
net localgroup administrators localservice /add

Admin command prompt & type the above,restart & all perfect now.

Great news. Windows should find drivers for new hardware, but seems yours needed Windows Update resetting before it could work.

I noticed in the specs he listed was a Dell Inspiron P07T.


extensive google searching of that led me to this specific Dell model (a Dell Inspiron 11z 1121).


his Dell laptop uses a Realtek audio driver
