windows 7 and 512 ram

I was just wondering if I could put windows 7 on and older machine running only 512 memory. I know that it's recommended at least 1 gb but, from what I've been reading on the net it would be possible. The machine in question is an old Dell dimension L866r.I'm just looking to see what the pros think of this. Here's the link to the article I read.

"Flawlessly' ..Is the strong word ....I'd say ....
Ok to surf on the net and watch youtube ..
You will see it starts to craw when you try to run any video edit program or any thing like that..even freezes up ...
1 GB ram is the best way to go ... IMO ..

cool..thank you, my kids use the machine mostly for surfing the net and browser games. I will keep you guys up to date on this little adventure.

If there is a graphics card capable of running Aero in that machine. You want to run Aero even on a low RAM machine. Trust me, it is a pain without Aero on such a system.

I had windows 7 beta running on an old compaq presario 5005SR from Sears.
P3 933
512 megs sd ram PC133 (came with 128megs, i upgraded)
geforce 5500FX PCI
X-Fi xtream gamer sound card
it came with winME so any os would be an upgrade

It could serf the net, run messengers, videos, stuff like that but it did run out of ram real fast and would start using the hdd. I don't think my compaq could use 1 gig of ram though so I went back to winXP. 1 gig recommended though. But it 'will' work.

On a side note I think I managed to get aero glass to work. But I could be wrong.
Also win7 ran better on it than vista.
