I have just updated a Sony VGN-BX197 from XP to Win7 Professional.

When I try to install drivers for the Radeon x700 graphic card I get the dreaded Black Screen and have to roll back to the standard windows graphic card driver.

I have found what should be the solution in post 15 here http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/8842-ati-mobility-radeon-x700-2.html but it does not seem to work.

Has anyone got an alternative solution?

Hello Joe236 and Welcome to SevenForums :)

Mobile Graphics are dependent on specific drivers from their manufacturer.
Can you try those steps here to see what it gives you?

Thank you for your reply.

I think I have the right driver but it's not installing correctly on my laptop.

When I first installed Win7 it used the Standard VGA Graphics driver.

I then used Windows Update to ensure my machine was up to date and it found the right driver for my ATIMOBILITY Radion X700 card. When I installed this driver through Windows Update I got a blank screen and had to revert to Safe Mode to roll back the driver.

In the link I gave in my first post it appears quite a few people had the same problem and were able to overcome it by closing the laptop lid after the Windows splash screen. I have tried that and it doesn't seem to work on my laptop.

Do you get a blank screen before logging on, or a black screen with a cursor after logging into Windows?

It loads to the Windows Logo splash screen ok but when it should then show the desktop the screen goes black although you can hear the rest of the laptop doing what it should do.

It appears the driver has installed but something is stopping the screen display.

There used to be a known issue, see if it helps you:

When on the (black) Windows Desktop, press 1 (one) time CTRL-ALT-DEL
New>Task
Browse... to the C:\Windows folder, scroll down and select/click explorer.

Many thanks for your further help.

I tried the 'press 1 (one) time CTRL-ALT-DEL' but I am not sure I carried it out properly. I assume the black screen should spring into life because there is no other way to 'Browse... to the C:\Windows folder'

KB302477 was already installed via Windows Update and KB3004394 was not installed until after I had the first problem with the graphic driver update.

Maybe it will be best to keep the standard Windows graphic driver and make sure Windows Update does not install the other one with future updates.
