Windows 7 Beta 1 (7000) First Impressions:

I just finished installing (and configuring) the new OS.

Time from wipe of Vista hard drive to now: 2 hours

I installed the bare necessities for me. Microsoft office (yes, that "xp" version I bought years ago still works), printer, and the all important Crackberry, uh, Blackberry software. Everything installed just fine. (Although Windows 7 dinged me on my WEI score, which won't be discussed here ). With only one exception, after installing Office XP, Windows 7 placed a non-descript folder icon on the desktop, no label, just a folder icon. I promptly placed it into the bit bucket, and I got a warning message that maybe I shouldn't delete it. I can't check it's properties, it's just an unlabeled folder on my desktop.

I recovered all my email and browser settings (lost the cookies tho....).

Other than that, everything went smoothly. The system seems "snappier" probably 'cause I haven't loaded it down with, uh, stuff.

Overall I give Windows 7 two thumbs up . Even in beta, Microsoft seems to be headed in the right direction.

Now (you hear knuckles crack'n) time to get under the hood and see what's tick'n.

New to the forum, but certainly not new to the concept, lol Now that the pleasentries have been completed...

Installed 7000 and everything was going pretty good. Installed Cisco VPN (5.0) and Office 2007. The Obligatory winamp and some other misc apps. Now all of the sudden, I can't minimize open windows, nor can i close them out by x-ing out. WTH?

Anyone else having this issue?

Haha, yeah I have opened it ... pretty weird Then again being addicted to PS CS4 Extended 64bit I doubt I will ever open Paint again. Why they waste their time on Paint instead of adding things like multi-monitor taskbars is beyond me. I am glad they removed Mail and all that other junk.

Or slightly more seriously ... some people would be so confused by that. Really making it so *YOU* can remove IE would be better than it not shipping with Windows.

Yes they could but people would not understand and/or like a computer that turned on with no browser at first. They don't want to do updates ever, let alone first. And even that would require they open Windows Update, download IE, restart (as you know it would require it) download a different browser, remove IE, restart (you know it would make you AGAIN) lol what a mess.

It would be a great marketing ploy and would get them used to running it at least once to get IE.

I think it would be a great marketing ploy, plus those of us purists that wish woe could remove it would have our field day with an IE-less (and thus ActiveX vulnerable-less) install of Windows....

C'mon, man, let me at least dream the dream for a *little* while before you burst my bubble....

One problem with that, you need to use it at least once so you can download your preferred browser and I don't think they will put Firefox on windows update any time soon LOL

But I think HP and Dell would love to put the Firefox installer on your desktop

And of course you could always use a USB flash drive Lots of them even come with the Firefox installer on it already.

I got my reply in before you replied, so you missed my reasoning - Windows Update in Vista and again in W7 runs independently of IE (although I am *betting* on the fact that it uses a lot of IE components, thereby killing my own argument for doing this) so it could be used to get IE....

i dont see it ever getting out of W7 or windows for that matter anytime soon...
