Hello, there. Another sad PC user with this issue. I'm 100% positive mine is. I built my own computer, used the 7 Beta version until I bought my own Ultimate version. Have been running that since it first came out and earlier this week, this error popped up. Ran a bunch of scans with no fixes. I also tried a system restore, but it wouldn't let me.

I've looked at this and other forums; however, I'm not very good with security issues. Here's the MGAD. Thanks!

I noticed you have an OEM version of Windows. Some things you should know about OEM:

OEM versions of Windows 7 are identical to Full License Retail versions except for the following:

- OEM versions do not offer any free Microsoft direct support from Microsoft support personnel

- OEM licenses are tied to the very first computer you install and activate it on

- OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard

- OEM versions cannot be used to directly upgrade from an older Windows operating system

You wouldn't happen to have changed the motherboard recently? Have you tried re-activating it? Sometimes you might have to use the telephone service (pain in the ass but the Windows activation service could be down). Since this is OEM you probably won't be able to get support from Microsoft.

It is not a new motherboard and have not tried reactivating it. I will try; however, I'm nervous this is the result of some sort of virus and I don't want to just fix the superficial problem on my desktop.

Thanks!

I'm curious what kind of scans did you run? Since it's OEM it's not like anyone can steal your key.

I'll re-look at the scans; however, I just typed in my product key again and this is the message I got:

"Type a different product key for activation
The product key you typed has been blocked from use by microsoft."

Why do you think this is?

Okay, so I've looked at OEM a little. My dad actually put the OS on his computer and I did on my laptop, as well as my desktop. I'm realizing that this is wrong now; however, they are all activated, so I'm not sure why an issue was never brought up. Also, my desktop was the first computer to install/activate, so if anything it should be the only one without the issue.

Sounds like your key got added to some sort of blacklist. Microsoft could have blocked it because it suspected it to be not genuine.

If you suspect a virus I would run some more scans. Disable or uninstall your current Antivirus and install Microsoft Security Essentials run some scans.

Download Malwarebytes, update and run a full scan.
Then useTDSSKiller, to see if any rootkits are present.
Another recommended program is AdwCleaner

If you really want to make sure you could use Windows Defender Offline on a clean PC, run it on the infected one.

Couldn't run Security Essentials because its recognizing my OS as not genuine. I haven't tried the Offline Defender, but I tried the others, as well as Norton, and no issues.

I have no idea why it would come up randomly. So I guess I need to buy a new key? As I said, my computer was the first, so I'm wondering why it has been targeted. It's a bit expensive to have to buy a new key; however, there is an upgrade to Win8 Pro for $40. Maybe I could do that? Or would it not upgrade because Win7 is not genuine?

Yeah you might have some issues upgrading from a non-genuine Windows. I would continue the attempt at resolving this issue. You said your Dad tried to use this key? Does your OEM key say anything about multi use or single use? Wondering if since your Dad is using it that you cannot.

I think he was under the impression that buying the Ultimate edition gave us a multi-license. We activated it on my desktop and laptop, as well as his laptop. There have been no issues for years until this week.

Where would I find information on the OEM as to whether it is multi or single?

The Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MSDN account.
Unless you are an MSDN subscriber, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.
You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

Please read the following posts.... .................................

and

http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinewindows7/thread/309bb621-92d5-43d6-98c1-2bb51b35607f

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

But I've been activated for years. This was purchased around December of 2009.

Also, my disks seem authentic. There was a USA label outside the box, which is sketchy, but the CDs seem fine.

So, my dad made a snap decision and bought a key online. This frustrated me, as he did no research or anything. However, it activated and shows no issues as of yet. If there are any issues, I'll just shoot the guys info off to Microsoft. But for now, I'm happy.

I still might upgrade to 8, though. And apparently you get a new product key with the upgrade, so I could have just done that. I just have some other issues, and a clean install might be nice. But I have 7, so all is well.

Anyhow - thanks for the help!

It is not legally possible to purchase just a Key online - except from the Microsoft Store (where is comes with access to the download).

If your father did that, then I recommend posting a new MGADiag report, as it is almost certain to be another MSDN Key - which will go bad sooner or later (probably sooner, as many pirates are offloading stock as fast as possible now)

Yep - it's another MSDN Key.
Demand a refund from the vendor, and report them to eBay (or whoever he got it from) and MS for fraud and piracy. - it maybe a good idea to try a chargeback on the credit card/paypal as well.

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.
