Hi All,
About nine months ago I received a used laptop with a small HD and Vista installed, both was not good for me so i brought a new HD and a copy of Windows 7. Although the copy of Windows was for a Dell system it had never been used or activated. All went well and all was good in the world with daily updates from Microsoft. Then yesterday I was hit with a message at the bottom of my screen saying my Windows is not genuine. I then looked at System page to find that the Windows Activation Status & Protection were both Not Available.

I then downloaded and ran MGA DIAG tool below is the report, hope this helps someone help me to fix this problem. ( p.s. I am a complete pc novice ). Thankyou.

If you didn't activate the Win 7. That is your problem.

BIGMCK -- this copy HAS been activated by me..and has work with no problems for over 9 months now, what i was saying is that when i got the copy, a genuine copy it was unopened and had never been used.

No, just an old hard drive which i took out of the ASUS system, replaced the HD then got an UN-used UN-opened UN-activated genuine copy of W7 which where originally meant for Dell systems. All i got was a disk and a product key sticker, i spoke to a Microsoft tech before i brought it and was told that there was no problem with it. When i activated it 9 months ago there was no problem with it and it has work fine til yesterday. I have had over 210 updates from Microsoft so it has been working, i have now noticed that Windows update has en-counted problems and Security Essentials has not been updated too all from 2 days ago.

This ASUS F5N computer was built in 2008 - over a year before WIndows 7 was released.
It CANNOT legally activate an OEM SLP license for Windows 7 (any edition) - and never could.
It appears to be licensed for Vista.

You MUST either reinstall the licensed version/edition of Windows for this machine, or install the appropriate Retail License.

The current Product Key cannot activate because
1) IT MAY NOT BE FOR THE CORRECT VERSION OF WINDOWS - or on the correct PC
2) The licensing system is missing certain files - which implies that attempts have been made to circumvent activation/validation requirements.

NOTE - OEM licenses/Product Keys for Windows CANNOT be moved from the original PC with which they were shipped for ANY reason whatsoever.

MSE may have triggered this since it requires you to have a legal and genuine copy of Windows. Now, all you can do is a reinstall with a new key. You need to buy a new OEM Windows copy to install. Always buy from a trustworthy seller to make sure you get a real Windows copy.

Thank you to all that replied to this cry for help.... after a lot of searching on this and other forums i have now got my LEGIT copy of W7 to be shown as activated AGAIN on this ASUS laptop. For your information all i did was follow a utube video which ended in the deletion of the slui file. After downloading and installing System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7, I was hit with a prompt to download Windows Activation Update this was done and now my system is back to how it was when i did this nine months ago, and the Windows activation in the system folder is now showing ACTIVATED and show the product id again.

So for anyone else out there who has the same problem, all i can say is keep with it and don't listen to the posts that tell you...

1. You didn't do something when you know you DID.
2. That it can not be done on that system even though you HAVE.
3. And that the system you have is just not capable of such a massive upgrade, and the legit copy will NEVER run on an ex Vista machine
4. And most importantly make you feel small, stupid, and like you have done something illegal.

From where did you purchase this Key?
It's of a type which is ONLY sold pre-installed on OEM manufacture (COA_SLP) - and cannot legally be sold otherwise.

If you bought it as a Key-only purchase, with download, it is definitely counterfeit.
Do you have a COA sticker to go with it?

Yes i do have the COA sticker as i have said before these disc's where for dell systems but where never used.

The disks are irrelevant - it's the provenance of the Key and sticker that is the worry. It's this that essentially defines whether it's counterfeit or not.
What is the exact wording on the sticker's top line?

The OA there means 'OEM Activation' - and should never have been sold without being previously attached to a machine.
I know one person who worked in a factory in the UK where they were making these 'packages' - he quit when he realised what they were doing, and I believe he informed the police.

Since MS appear to be activating these Keys normally, it's possible that they have taken the view that for PR reasons they will accept the loss, or that there is some loophole through which these ones slipped.
Having said that - don't be too surprised if you are suddenly informed (again) that your license is invalid and you have a non-genuine system. They may be awaiting court proceedings before taking such action, or there may be other reasons for a delay.
If that does happen, please post back with a new MGADiag so we can check that there's not a technical reason for the notification

That won't change the provenance of the Product Key at all - and the current install is already showing as 'genuine' so needs no reinstall from a licensing POV.
