The "123456" update almost looks like it was made just as a test update file in my opinion... I mean...Notepad?!?!?? Not to mention the update is apparently KB123456... Hmmmmmm

How did you get the pic of the car there? Part of the update? An enhancement to the system's speed... :p Seriously though...does it seem like Windows is faster after? I have heard people claim that after the update that it feels as though Win is running a bit faster...

It is the RTM
It is. End of story. Just because they released a HOTFIX doesn't change that RTM is RTM.

Did you even bother to read post #11 before posting that?

I am a little curious, though, about the Notepad hotfix. I mean, seriously, Notepad?! Has there even been any changes to Notepad since XP (aside from the new icon introduced in Vista)? Windows Notepad is really not much more than an edit control in a window--what kind of a bug could they have possibly found in Notepad?!

To answer my own question, absolutely nothing changed. I disassembled the "new" Notepad.exe from the hotfix, and disassembled the one in RTM. The code is identical. The only change are in the "bookkeeping" (non-code stuff like the version string, which obviously has to be different).

My guess is that (at least for the Notepad update), that these are not real hotfixes. These are test updates, similar to the test updates that they had for Beta/RC to test and make sure that Windows Update works properly for RTM. Just like the test updates, the updated files are identical to the original except for a version bump. Furthermore, I think that these tests were supposed to be internal to Microsoft (since they are not showing up in WU), but some n00b idiot saw them, thought that they were real updates (or just got excited over the "new version"), and put them on the Internet. I don't know if all of them are test updates or if some of them are real (maybe the 9xxxxx ones are real, and the rest are not?)... I'm not going to waste my time diffing their disassembles to find out. :P

My thoughts exactly DataMan47... I mean KB123456 to update Notepad's version? WTF is that? I don't know if all of them are test samples, as numerous people have reported that their copy of Windows 7 actually seems to run faster afterward, but maybe it is just a placebo effect...

-from V0id

You are not the first to say that v0id. I have read posts all over where people claim that Windows does run faster after...but then again,I don't underestimate the powers of the placebo effect. So maybe not all of them are for testing purposes only...? I guess we will find out on Aug. 6th maybe...

There is no 7600.16399 version of Windows! The version for the kernel's EXE was bumped. That doesn't make this 16399 (once again, I refer you to post #11). Oh, and did you know that if you manually installed the hotfix and selected the LDR branch instead of the GDR branch, you could have a version in the 2xxxx range? Yes, a bump of more than 4000! Quick, don't miss out on the wonders of super-placebo!

And based on the obviously too low KB number, I'm going to guess that the kernel EXE hasn't actually changed except for a version bump and that all you did was install a test update.

There is not just one update!

As I said, some might be real, some might not be. The one that updated the kernel EXE is most likely just a "fake" test update (due to its KB #), and that's the one giving you that shiny version number that you seem so mesmerized by.

+1 DataMan47

Yeah, it shows that on the 1st page of this thread. I don't know whether these are test files or not. Maybe some are...maybe some are not...maybe they are all test files...it is all hearsay and conjecture at this point. Be patient and wait until there is actually a legitimate release from MS through TechNet, then maybe we will find something factual out. :D

The 9xxxxx updates do look like real updates, though. The most interesting one is KB973751, which updates the setup. This is an update that doesn't do anything on a live system and makes sense only as slipstreamed onto the install DVD. It could be possible that Microsoft will release DVDs with this particular hotfix slipstreamed in (it won't be the first time that they had done something like that; e.g., releasing XP "SP2B" images to MSDN that are basically SP2 images with a hotfix slipstreamed). Note that none of this changes the fact that RTM is RTM and them slipstreaming a hotfix into the official media doesn't change RTM's status as RTM.

I installed these updates and the build string has changed as mentioned above. You can find the locations at the 'My Digital Life' forum.
I think they fixed the monitor off/sleep problem. So far so good??
