Windows 7 cannot find file.

I “used” to have a .docx file on my desktop but somehow it has disappeared. I searched my hard drive and search finds the file but when I click to open I get the following message: Windows cannot fine ‘file:///c:/<file name> Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

Is there anything I can do to try and recover this file?

What you may have found is a link to the file that is no longer there.
Have you seen if it's not at the recycled bin?
Just for precaution, do a check disk.
Open Explorer, right click on the C: drive - Properties - Tools - Error check - check now.
It will schedule to check on next restart.

If you know the file name (even approximately) Everything<dot>com will list every file on your PC
- use filter "*.docx" ... including the asterisk but exclude the quotes
- and "Everything" will list every .docx file on your pc, attached drives, even hidden files
