I have used windows 7 and I love it though when it comes to compatibility windows sucks.

First issue: windows doesn't like a game called "command and conquer generals" did some research and found it wasent compatable with vista eather and cant find a fix

Second issue: windows virtual pc is blocked because of compatability issues the virtual pc thing that comes with 7 dosent work (because of my motherboard not supporting it).

I just posted this to see if there was any way that you can force windows to run the program instead of blocking it and to make a problems and solutions thread:huh:

Yes you can have vary degrees of sucess by doing the following (disabling desktop composition and visual themes can work some magic also).

To get a program or driver to install if the driver or program was written for an earlier OS eg vista or XP, and wont install - do the following below. Once its installed you can have another go at it by changing the settings above, and others:

To install a driver OR program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and instal

To run the program in compatibility mode right click any shortcut to the program, or find the exe program in program files, and do as above and start the program.

If you need help type "how to run a program in compatibility mode" in the help & support search.

For virtual xp mode you need a processor that supports VT (Virtual Technology), and then you enable it in the bios - http://www.guru3d.com/news/intel-cpu-virtualization-confusion-undermining-windows-7-xp-mode-/

In my bios it can be found in the advanced menu - cpu configuration - Vanderpool technology -this is the VT, and can be enabled here.

Then you download and install - to find out more - I know you said your motherboard didnt support it, but its the cpu, and whether you can enable VT in the bios, of course you may have meant that, but incase you got it wrong, or would like more details go here.

Well and welcome to SF! justasic Have you tried right clicking on the game's installer or main shortcut or executable to try running in the XP compatibility mode? Another thing many are not even aware of 7's new compatibility troubleshooting option also seen in the right click menu!

Here I run some of those good old 98-XP games on the 64bit RC without a problem as well as most other XP/Vista compatible games and apps. The troubleshooting tool will prompt you to run the installer and ask if the program installed correctly once it is on. Usually that will automatically place a new registry entry to set the program/game in the XP mode.

It may not be the board itself preventling use of the VPC or new XP mode but the model cpu you are running there. Your next step now if you haven't already done so would be downing the IPIU or Intel Processor Identification Utility directly from MS available at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/configure-bios.aspx

You'll also want to look over the guide for this as well. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8247-windows-xp-mode-install-setup.html

I was fortunate enough here right from the start with the AMD board where all this was already enabled by default. If you find out that the cpu supports virtualization then you need to look over some additional bios settings information for that model board you have there.

From what I gather from the OC forums however the advise to "disable" virtualization when ocing is seen quite a bit on that model board. In fact the term "Virtualization Technology" or VT may be the item to look for. That may be buried a little deeper like in the dram timings section or advanced when going into a sub section there.

That's odd as I ran Generals on both Vista and Windows 7 by using compatibility mode and running them with XP checked and running as administrator. Now I haven't installed but one game since installing the RTM 64bit and it is a Command and Conquer game (Renegade) and it runs just fine.

Want to hear an odd one? For one old XP 32bit tv tuner app I got that running on the 64bit 7 beta with 32bit device drivers for a short period of time while it simply would not run at all even in the XP compatibility on the 32bit Vista!

Since that I finally went for the updated version of the same program by way of electronic download since it's not available in disk form and it works like a champ on the 64bit RC. In fact I run a few old 98-XP games on the 64bit 7 as well.

The one thing I noticed right off when 7 was still in beta was the improvement seen in backward compatibility as well as the 32bit emulation on the 64bit side! With only a few exceptions most everything being run on 7 presently is still 32bit and still compatible with the previous versions.

Windows 7's virtual XP mode requires a CPU that supports VT -- Intel's Virtualization Technology (whatever that is). Unfortunately, yours does not.

The older Microsoft VirtualPC running in compatibility mode will work (as you've discovered), but you give up quite a bit of performance and the desktop integration that is available through the Windows 7 Virtual XP mode.

The one problem you will continue to have from the start is not first seeing the Virtual PC RC installed first and then the XP mode RC following the system restart as long as both the board and cpu support virtualization to begin with. Without the new not old VPC forget about the new XP mode as well.

The elements in the new VPC are required just to run the XP mode. By your own description there you've been trying to "mickey mouse" things to get it to work and it won't. The beta worked with the beta for the other and now the RC for one works with the RC of the other there. One formula only!

As far as XP it wasn't that hard to get used to but simply a "Big Downgrade"! from where 7 is now! :D

For the rest of us who ran XP and then Vista later and even previous versions the debate on that is long settled! "hey hey 7 baby!"
