For years, Avast was my main antivirus, however I've been testing MSE on my XP based laptops and I'm impressed with the performance of the program. MSE has a very light footprint and you normally wouldn't know it's there, except that green check mark to let you know you're protected. It picked up a couple of things that Avast missed, and doesn't give all of those false positives. On one laptop, Avast always finds a virus of some nature in the pagefile.sys. They all are false positives, as once I installed MSE, no such things are found. Finally, Microsoft has released two outstanding products in the same year (Windows 7 & MSE). Now, if they could only go to work on IE to make the total package, that would be fantastic.

w7 anti virus

The licensed avira security suite is the best after we have tried
most of them.
also the viper which had a lot of praise made driver conflicts which
windows 7 had to stop the sunbelt driver due to incompatibility
and Viper did not remove autorun.inf from usb drives

Avast total security+Microsoft essentials+Malwarebytes 1.44
This is the recipe dose we give to all our clients
all registered (where applicable)
and has been proven the best, any virus of malware must cross those 3

It is never recommended to include two types of anti-virus on the same machine as they will in one way or another conflict with each other...

My new computer came with a trial of norton internet Security 2010. This trial expires in 2 days.

I have been trying to decide if I want to redo the norton, or try one of these other free av things.

I have pretty much come to the conclusion that Avast and AVG are the two popular free ones....but, I've read that AVG doesn't have any real time protection. Does Avast?

What about MSE?

I'm looking for advice please. My time is running out.

norton is gr8.. if can buy it den buy it.. but if u looking for free av den go 4 avast mse or avira.. not avg... and yes wat about firewall? because in free av there no firewall.. if u want free firewall den go 4 online armour...

i personally use NIS 2010 + avast 5 free [snoozed] + a2 squared free [snoozed] + mse [snoozed]

Just wanted to say thanks for all the input. I decided so go with MSE....so, far I like it. It actually found something that norton missed....so, go figure.

I always know that if I'm unhappy with MSE, I have a few other options out there.

Have a great day!!!!!

I've been happy with MSE so far so good.
One does wonder how MS offers this app without alienating the other vendors.

I want an A/V app that tracks down the virus programer, and sterilizes them so they can't breed.

I too am happy with MSE. Does not seem to bog the system down and quickly catches what few dangers hit my machine. In addition, use a firewall and common since when browsing. BTW: I use defender as well.

you mean Windows defender?
Then It's a waste.
As MSE already uses Windows defender functions,, so it will automatically itself turn it off.

MSE is an excellent antivirus, no false positives, quiet upgrading, excellent performance. Don't let that Windows Defender look fool you! I was not a fan of that program myself, a big, resource hog that doesn't take the place of a full fledged anti virus. MSE is all you can ask for in a anti virus program (free or paid). Give it a two week test spin and you'll see why.
