After installing an Nvidia 8400 graphics card, my computer has been incapable of shutting down without having to pull the plug on it.

Could you provide more detail? Please run Furmark to see if there are any GPU errors.

Leave it for some time. No, it will NOT burn your graphics card.

I don't understand, is it a timed test? Otherwise I'm having trouble finding the results

Run the Furmark Test for few hours - I will grab the owner (Jonathan_King) of the Furmark tutorial (I did not make that tutorial at all...)
Watch for artifacts on the screen, and keep an eye on the temperature log. If you see artifacts, or the temperature levels out, stop the test.

Hello,

Just start the test running, and sit back and watch. You'll see a temperature graph on the screen, logging your GPU temps. When that stops increasing (levels out), stop the test.

If you notice any graphical glitches on the screen, stop the test as well.

Now could you please describe your original problem a bit more detailed? What happens when you shut down?

Please upload a jcgriff2 report: http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/96879-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

original problem

After giving the sleep or shut down command, my computer goes through the sleep / shut down process. It immediately restarts after shutting down.

I can't help but feel its because of the NVidia 8400 graphics card I just installed, since this is when the problem started.

I noticed that a fan runs longer than usual during the shut down process, like the device never receives the command to shut off. I think the video card continues to receive power which, in turn, forces the computer to start?

Ok well, I ran furmark 1.8.2 for an hour. There was no temperature graph and the toggle graph button did not function. I took a screen shot after an hour with F9 and I can't find it. No data file was logged nor was I prompted to make one. Average FPS was 3. Start and End temperature read 0°C at start and 0°C at end.

It may be your old nVidia display drivers causing this problem.
Code:
5/14/2009 4:48:07 PM C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\nvlddmkm.sys
Install updated ones from here: NVIDIA DRIVERS 266.58 WHQL

Nice guess, but the driver was out of date because i had performed a system restore before running the jcgriff program. Thanks for trying, but the problem is persisting to occur. I found that crashing the computer by holding the power button results in a complete shut down. I'm still open to suggestions though.

Yes, please install the new driver; even if it doesn't help, it will at least get that out of the way.

Also, have you tried putting the old graphics card back in?

well it comes with ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics installed already. I did not have to remove anything to put the card in, there was a slot open for it. It's been updated, but I'm starting to think the card isn't causing the problem
