Windows 7 Crashes Caused by Some Media and Storage Devices

Some media and storage devices can cause crashes of computers running the latest iteration of the Windows client, Microsoft informed.

The Redmond company did not offer a specific list of hardware products that have problems playing nice with Windows 7, but the software giant did deliver a few details.

Not only Windows 7 computers are impacted by this issue, but also Windows Server 2008 R2 machines.

According to reports from users, the crashes are associated with freshly installed third-party applications designed to be used in concert with devices relying on multiple transport Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) or on the Windows Portable Device (WPD).

Microsoft explained that Windows 7 PCs will crash when MTP or WPD devices are connected for the first time.

Customers revealed that they received the following stop error message: “STOP: 0x00000001 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) APC_INDEX_MISMATCH.”

Microsoft did indicate that the stop error message parameters may vary from computer to computer, and that not all Stop 0x00000001 can be associated with the issue described above.

Now see, IMO, if a third-party application causes a crash, that's the developer's fault. Some would say it's Microsoft's fault for "not properly supporting this one, specific, obscure program in their OS".

The first done here with any new flash drive for example since those also have their own program is nuke'em before use'em!

I get rid of the factory crap and if needed can reformat back to Fat 32 later after a new volume is created. That insures integrity and improved detection when plugged in by Windows.

For those however they are not the higher priced vault type with the separate small security partition however.

With other external hard drives the installer software can be the main cause for what is being pointed to there. Each time you plug of them in the installer menu comes up for the Fat 32 factory volume on those listed as compatible for Windows/Mac. The autorun.inf file sees to that.

The companies do point out one thing however for Windows users. Often the information advises reformatting the Fat 32 to NTFS for Windows use. Having run into the installer headaches when going out and buying the first external here I simply follow my own earlier advice there of simply wipe drive first, use new volume later!

Most of the problems right off are from the software that comes included. Once you reformat or go the length of deleting that off to create a new NTFS volume anything else would be hardware related as a result of a defect. The patch will be a help for those however who loaded up a drive with data before taking similar steps.
