As far as I'm aware, Windows 10 will still accept Windows 7 licence keys when doing a clean install with 10 media, and that will automatically upgrade the licence to 10 once activated. I don't think MS has ever changed that, even though the free upgrade promotion has long gone.
I saw something on Youtube recently that showed you how to install Win10 for free. It looked relatively easy and I only watched it once out of interest but it began by establishing if you had a genuine Win 7 licence and if you did, you could install it. I did consider it but have since changed my mind.
