Windows 7: File and Folder Sharing Issues

Hmm, if I do the following:

\\COMPUTERNAME\SHAREDFOLDER

It takes about 45 seconds, but the folder DOES open.

But, it only works from computers that have accessed that folder in the past, I tried a laptop that hasn't ever accessed the machine in question and it was unable to do the same thing as my wife's desktop.

I must have mistyped it or something, tried it again and it worked.

Perhaps a service isn't running, but I'm not sure what to look for, suggestions?

I know this is confusing but it did happen to me in the past. There are couple of places you need to take a look at.

1 - Right click on the folder that you want to share -> properties
then click on the Sharing Tab->Advanced Sharing then click on Permissions to see if you have "Everyone" on the list with appropriate Read/Write or full control.

2 - Right click on the folder again ->Properties and this time click on Security tab and check if you have "Everyone" on the list.

I have officially confirmed that you can access the folders by typing the address into the address bar from any computer. The problem seems to be with the ability to "connect" to the computer and getting a list of available folders to browse. Write permissions and security are consistent with "everyone" having appropriate read/write access.

Good discussion. I've been searching the 'web' for my particular question, though, and I'm surprised that I haven't found an answer. Basically, it is this: What is different between W7 Pro 64 bit and W7 32 bit Ultimate in terms of accessing shared directories with password protection? I have read that 64/32 should not be an issue. Dates are the same, but W7 Pro 64 bit out of the box is not behaving the same as W7 32 bit Ultimate systems on my network. All the computers on my simple router/switch network are Windows 7 32 bit these days, except for one Mac OS X machine, and a W7 Pro laptop that wants to log in to a university network, so is keyed to a domain. All the W7U machines prompt for a user and password to access shared drives and do so easily. I have the same user name for all, except the laptop. Dates are the same. The mac can access them with user/pass as well. I just added another laptop with Toshiba's W7 Professional 64bit setup, and tried to set up shared directories with the same user login name as the others. It can access the W7U machines in the same way that the others do, but the W7U machines cannot access the shared directories on the W7P machine. I'm prompted with a domain that is the name of the machine that wants to log in. Dates are are the same for all machines. The mac gets rejected because the user/pass does not match, although I know they are correct. Before I start doing a lot of tweaking of the W7 Pro machine, I want to find out if my Pro setup SHOULD work as the Ultimate boxes in the same way or if it is normal for Pro to be more "picky" about sharing. Maybe the Toshiba setup has modified the default Pro configuration. Thanks in advance for feedback about this.
