I just started using Windows 7 after being with XP for awhile and people always told me to to avoid XP's firewall so I always used Zonealarm.

However Zonealarm has been causing me problems and just giving me a headache and I've read windows 7 firewall is actually good, Is this true and is there any settings I need to change to it or just turn it on?

For Windows 7 OS the Windows Firewall is recommended as being appropriate.

No firewall can protect you absolutely if you DON'T surf sensibly staying away from sites known to cause problems.
NEVER randomly click on things you know nothing about.

In addition -
ALWAYS use
* Anti Virus plus Anti Malware software,
* have a router plus firewall,
* keep all relevant programs updated & scan on a regular basis for infections.

Zone Alarm is NOT recommended to be used with Win 7.
If you have it there remove it this way.

Windows Firewall can hardly be rated with the best. There are a number of free Firewalls available that are far superior to the Windows Firewall. At a pinch Comodo free and ZoneAlarm free Firewalls come to my mind.

The Windows Firewall is good enough for an average user. It serves its purpose and can be configured as required.

Although, if you're looking for something superior and don't want to try ZoneAlarm again, give Comodo Firewall a try.

The alternative is to replace your anti-virus software with a full-fledged Internet Security suite that includes a built-in Firewall, thereby acting as an all-in-one solution for your PC.

When you say configured do you mean changing settings on the firewall or just allowance of programs?

ZA has been very good to me, including Win7 (numerous flavors). What "problems" are you having with it?

One problem with the Windows 7 Firewall is the lack of a user friendly GUI. If you want to use it you could try Windows Firewall Control, which is a front-end that makes configuring the firewall easier. An alternative I can recommend is the Comodo Firewall (available in 32 bit and 64 bit installers). I'm running it in Windows 7 and it's very stable.
