It's nothing to worry about, they'd have to go and physically install Vbootkit on your system, it can't be done remotely and it's nothing new. Just scare tactics really.

Old news. See 0wning Vista from the boot from back in 2007. Same guys, same rootkit. If it was that big of a problem for Vista two years ago, we would have heard more about it.

Some have even accused them of code-stealing.

This is good news Joan. Thanks. I wonder how this will work. Not that I will need to worry about the expiration date since I will buy retail as soon as it's released but there appears to NOT be one on this version. Will it just expire in June 2010? Anybody know?

Edit: Yes it does expire June 2010. Hourly shutdowns will start a month or two earlier.

Good idea. MS seems to be trying to make up for Vista.

Vista was only roadmapped internally as an 18 month operating system anyway. Looks like Microsoft are softening now Mr Gates has gone.

Give millions of people the latest and greatest OS Microsoft have done and let them have it free for a whole year. Everyone installs and runs applications for Windows7.

Now...

After a year the all forget when it will start to shutdown etc so when it happens people are more likely to just pay to get it fully activated than apposed to rebuilding there machine with what?

Free for a year...? I think it's a little too much. I would have said "Free until the final release". Then, people would want to buy the retail because they loved the RC! But for a whole year... people will just stay with the RC until the expiration comes........

Yes this looks like one. The Official RC is valid until June 2010

where are they getting the June date from?
winver shows the expiration date with 2. march 2010 or are they adding the 120 days you can get with rearm?

the max date for evaluation period is upto 1st June 2010. you can see it by typing slmgr.vbs -dlv at "Run.." command or at search box. this is as under:

as you can see there is 3 rearm count is left on that. if rearm is availed then you will again extend the evaluation period for 30 days over 1st March 2010 and 3 rearm means 3 x 30 = 90 days, that means on first rearm extension you will get 1st April 2010, on 2nd rearm-till 1st May 2010 and on 3rd rearm you will get an evaluation expiry date on 1st June 2010.

rearm tool : slmgr.vbs -rearm

To avoid interruption, it’s recommended that you and your customers rebuild test machines by using a valid Windows operating system before Windows 7 Beta and Windows 7 RC expire. Windows will automatically notify you that the expiration process is about to begin. Two weeks later, your PC will shut down every two hours. For Windows 7 Beta, the bihourly shutdowns will begin July 1, 2009. The software will expire August 1, 2009. For Windows 7 RC, the bihourly shutdowns will begin March 1, 2010. The software will expire June 1, 2010.

yes, that is the same thing. after 1st March 2010 the notification/shut down will start. to make your RC copy work without this disturbance please use the rearm tool (slmgr.vbs -rearm) on 1st March to gain 30 days extension and you can repeat this action for 2 more counts at the interval of 30 days to finally reach 1st June 2010.

But dear, I am dead sure that you will never use this rearm tool as your machine must have a final release/RTM copy of win7 much before the expiry date of this RC copy.
