Windows 7 freezes when I put laptop to sleep

I am using a SONY VAIO NW120DS and just recently upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows Vista. Every now and then, when I close my laptop lid, my laptop does not go to sleep like how it is supposed to. Instead, the screen turns off, but I can hear from the sound and the side power light that the computer is still running. When I open the laptop lid again and try to use the laptop, it is unresponsive. This only happened after I upgraded to Windows 7, and it doesn't happen every time, but it happens enough that it gets extremely annoying because I have to force shut my laptop when that happens.
Sorry if this question has already been posted before - I am a new member of this forum. Thank in advance for the advice!

Hi Chronic and welcome to sevenforums

Sometimes win 7 and sleep/hibernate dont play nice with each other. Can you check the power plan settings for sleep and hibernation when on ac and battery.
Also are eyou 32bit or 64?

thanks

Quite simple, don't use Hibernate or Sleep.

The options are all there.
Mines either waiting or off.

I'm using 64-bit windows. My power setting is set that whenever I close the laptop lid, it is supposed to sleep to conserve power while on AC or battery. Sleeping while on battery is especially important because I'm in university and am without AC for hours at a time.
Thank you so much in advance for the instructions and patience in helping me. I am tech-blind and barely know what drivers are... I just know that they are things that the system automatically takes care of! It's annoying when I'm in the lecture hall and I open the laptop lid, only to find that it didn't really sleep but the screen is blank and it is unresponsive. Thanks again.

"Windows 7 freezes when I put laptop to sleep"????
That's funny; Complete new install Windows7 64bit just solved this problem for me on my Toshiba.
Had the same problem but than in Vista 32bit.

Are there some less time-consuming solutions?

I've tried many of the advice from googling and none of them work still.
My laptop is still clearly awake when i tell it to go to sleep, but the screen is off and it is unresponsive
----
If this helps, whenever that happens, this is logged in the event viewer:
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
Event 41 Kernel-Power

I am having the same exact problem as Chronic, and no one seems to know how to fix it... I wonder what's wrong with it? My laptop is fairly new; it's only a little over a month old.

From a m/soft support engineer answer:

"Not all power plans are available with all systems. In order to see what power plan is best for your machine, please do the following:
1. Click on the Start button
2. In the search field, type in CMD
(Right click on CMD "run as administrator")
3."Yes"
4. At the command prompt, type in:
powercfg -availablesleepstates (and press enter)

5. The response will tell you what sleep states are available to you on your machine."

If u r at Uni - surely you are surrounded by computer geeks??

There is probably a setting in your bios or registry which is not set up correctly.
