I think however that we need to review fresh copies of both SFC and CheckSUR - please run both again and post the CBS and CheckSUR logs, and we'll see if there's anything left in there. (I'm confusing myself trying to work out timelines )

Both the SFC portion of the CBS log, and the CheckSUR log, are clear of errors.

The only remaining 'error' in the CBS log is
2013-01-19 16:13:26, Error CBS Failed to shred identity: Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-LanguagePack [HRESULT = 0x80070057 - E_INVALIDARG]

I don't think that's at all relevant to the problem, though.

Please attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using Internet Explorer - what happens?
When/if it fails, go to www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag - follow any advice there for fixing problems that may show, and then go back to validation again if appropriate.

Post back with your results.

I enjoy the challenge of the more complex cases - the trouble is that I don't like to give up, so tend to carry on until someone cries 'Uncle'

I think this time it's going to have to be me that does it - I really have no idea where to go from here, except a repair install of the OS.

Hopefully a repair should succeed, and you won't lose any data - but as with all things, prepare for the worst, and back up your data to external media first.

Thanks again for all your help. Will let you know how it turns out. Won't be running this until Tuesday at the earliest, when I can get back into my office to download the install iso and create a new install disc. (Crappy internet connection at home).

Just wanted to say I finally got around to running a Repair Install, and i am once again successfully running Genuine Windows. Thanks again for all your help, am just keeping my fingers crossed that this also fixed the error I was getting where I'd restart into lo-res with my user data corrupt which made me run system restore about 25 times. Again, thanks so much for all the time you took to help.
