Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit keeps freezing - please help?

Hello, I have been pulling my hair out with my laptop and wonder if anybody can help me? It has got increadibly slow at doing anything at all - just posting here has taken me over half an hour. The laptop keeps freezing completely and I am unable to even shut it down in the normal way, instead having to hold the power button in. I keep getting (not responding) at the top of my browser and at the top of whatever program or page I happen to have open at the time it freezes and then it just does nothing.

I am desperate to find out what is causing this and how to resolve it so I look forward to any replies offering help.

Can we get the following:

1- System specs so we know what hardware we are dealing with.

2-event viewer log errors

There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Event viewer (local) and look for errors listed in the last day, week, etc. Then go to the windows log>application tab. Finally the windows Logs>system tabs.

You want to look for all errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

3- boot into safe mode (F8), does it do the same thing?

I looked at the event viewer logs by typing eventvwr into search as you said - there are tons of red Errors but only 7 red Criticals. The 7 critical errors are all the same, this is what they say.

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Last night I followed some instructions I found on another thread to do a disc cleanup - it took ages but since then my laptop seems to be running a bit better. Not perfect though, I am still getting it freezing up and getting (not responding) at the top of programs/browser.

When I boot in safe mode it doesn't do it but all of my icons are massive and the screen is back to the old fashioned style of windows.

The fact that the problems disappears in safe mode usually indicates a driver issue of some sort (perhaps video driver)

Please check event viewer for any error (critical or not) that refers to app hang, crash, or anything that relates to the freezing.
