Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit - Black screen with active cursor

Hi, thanks in advance for the advice i will hopefully receive.

I have only had my Asus CM 1730-03 desktop for 4 days and it works fine except one very important thing. Four out of 5 times when I turn it on, it shows the Asus logo and the Windows 7 logo and plays the Windows 7 music, then I see a black screen with an active cursor that I can move with the mouse. No key commands work, like CTRL-ALT-DELETE. All I can do is hold the power button in until it turns off, then turn it on again. Even when it does boot successfully and I use it for a while, when it goes into rest mode, I get the same black screen and active cursor and have to power down again.

The only installations I have done are Kapersky anti-virus and an internal Linksys Wireless-G adapter from my old computer. At first I did not install the software for the wireless adapter, but I took it out of the PC today, installed the software successfully, and re-installed the adapter (per the instructions) and the computer is still behaving the exact same way.

I concur w/britton, ... its most often a HDD if it freezes pre win logo w/a blinking text cursor, if you say the win boot starts but you get black screen (abscence of images) but you get a mouse (which is shaded multi colored usually (and im assuming yours is) then it may also be a redraw/repaint screen buffer issue or an unusual presentation of ascreen mode incompatability. but if it works occasionaly, get a replacement or refund at the fault of the manufactured or assembled parts, or installed s/w that was branded into it for such profits, bbelieve me they can buy you a new one. if they dont throw it out, some outlet will sell it for $20 one day (hah)

Solution for Windows 7 Black Screen with Mouse Pointer

this issue can usually be resolved with a relatively simple fix that has been around since Vista days. the problem is often (usually?) caused by corruption in the event logs. i've seen other solutions related to resolving driver conflicts but this is the easiest approach to try first if it works for you:

1 - use Windows CD to boot into Repair mode and get to a command prompt
1a - this is really hard to do in Vista (wondering if someone knows a better way?): click through to the screen where you choose an OS installation then change the radio button to use a System Restore you've created. when you hit next, it will complain you don't have one (if you do, i don't know what will happen). at the proceed/cancel prompt, hit Esc twice and you will get to the System Recovery Options screen.
3 - Choose Command Prompt
4 - change to c:\windows\system32\winevt
5 - backup current Logs directory (ren Logs Logs_fu)
6 - create new Logs directory for new logs to be generated (md Logs)
7 - reboot
