I've looked through as many threads as I can think of and have found nothing to help. I'm posting this on the general forum as I think the problems I'm having might be linked.

IE 8 has for months now slowed to a crawl on my desktop. It used to be fine but is effectively unusable now. I tried all the suggestions (reset, close add-ons etc.) but it remains almost impossibly slow.

I installed the beta and later the full version of IE9 on my laptop with no problem. However it will not install on the desktop. I've tried at least a dozen times with no success. The installation fails with no good reason why. It says it failed and gives you a link to follow. I've done everything in the link, tried installing from Windows update and manually, tried the alternative download site, etc. Nothing works.

The Service pack 1 fails to install. At least this is consistent and fails to install on both Desktop and Laptop. Once again, no reason is given, just that it failed. In more years than I care to admit to I've never had an update fail or give me any problem.

I've Googled until blue in the face, have, been through all the microsoft sites, followed all the instructions - nothing.

Whether this is connected or not I'm not sure. I mention it in case something triggers an inspired thought from the knowledgeable denizens of this forum. I've installed Naturally Speaking 11. This works perfectly on the laptop but, though it installed on the desktop, every time I try to access my profile (I've reinstalled Dragon and made new profiles three times) I get a message saying I can't access it as I either do not have sufficient rights or because it's in use by another windows program. As I'm the only user, there is only one account on the PC - administrator - and I can't possibly think of what other program could access the profile I'm stumped. So are Nuance with whom I've exchanged some dozen emails.

Has anyone any idea what might be causing any of these problems please? I have honestly chased and followed every suggestion I can find on other sites to no avail. I have a sneaking suspicion they are connected but am not technical so it's only a gut feeling.

In case it's relevant I ran the system file checker and it came up clear.

Any help or suggestions would be most welcome please. I must warn that I verge on the dim when it comes to the technicalities of computers so please can I request words of one syllable in any suggestions. Many thanks in hopeful anticipation.

Desperate John.

Hello John, There are a few updates which are required ahead of SP1, make sure you have those, the update error should tell you. If you have a restore point before the problem restore to there. In my sig, follow the CCleaner link, download and use it do de-junk your computer. Use the Windows Defrag utility too.

Sorry, I just noticed your post is some months old. I appologize no one came to your aid sooner.

Hi, Sorry for not responding but I only got notified of your posts yesterday! I had in fact moved this to a different forum and thought it had been deleted from here. The problems were linked. I managed to get in touch with the appropriate Microsoft help desk and, after some weeks of trying different things, none successful, I was advised to replace windows 7 using the 'upgrade' facility so that my programs and data wouldn't be lost.

It took an entire day to do this and install all the updates but, following it, all the updates installed, I was able to install IE9, and I could get Naturally speaking to work. I have explained this in detail somewhere else but I'm afraid I can't track down which forum/thread it was in.

However, many thanks for the response and, once again, apologies for the lack of a response before now.
