I have recently finished building my computer and brought a copy of windows 7 (home premium) 64bit to go with it. But when I try to install I never get past "collecting information" where I am being asked to "Select A Driver To Install" as a driver for my "DVD Device" is missing (apparently). I assumed that the driver I needed would be on my motherboard driver disk. I clicked the disk and told it to "rescan" and it only said "There's no device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers". When I navigate directly to the sata, raid & ide drivers sometimes I get a: nVidia nForce Serial ATA Controller on the screen but when I click on that it says the same thing after about 10 seconds or tells me it cannot install and I need to get a new driver from my distributor (I have tried the drivers of the Asus website but the same result). What do I do?

PC:
AMD Phemon X4 965 @ 3.4ghz (black edition)
2gb RAM
250gb HD (sata)
DVD-ROM (IDE)

Note: it's brand new and doesn't have an existing windows installation.

Welcome iCow :D

Lets start with a little more info. What is the brand & models of your HD & DVD drives ?

Are you connected to the internet via ethernet cable on your MB when you start the win7 install ? If so, win7 should find 99% of the drivers needed. ;)

It's likely not the SATA controller as Win7 installer has almost all of them except the most obscure.

Does the HD show up in BIOS correctly? Set SATA controller to AHCI first, then IDE mode if necessary.

Where did you get Win7? If you burned DVD yourself, burn another using IMgBurn at 4x speed - or try flash stick install: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2432-usb-windows-7-installation-key-drive-create.html

Try pre-partitioning the HD using free Partition Wizard bootable CD. Format NTFS Primary and mark it Active.

Remove all but 2gb of RAM to try install.

Test the HD using maker's diag/repair full CD scan: http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html followed by http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html run from the DVD command line.

Don't remember exactly what it is called but the Nvidia Nforce boards have some type of built in protection...could this be preventing the installs? Since it is a new build. You do have everything attached correctly to the mobo do you not?

@ DocBrown: HD Specs: http://www.elive.co.nz/seagate-barracuda-250gb-sata-8mb-t14377.php as for the internet no I will try that now
@Gregrocker: HD shows up in bios. AHCI is not supported by my chipset. Only have 2gb of RAM at the moment. Disk is the system builders pack from microsoft (not burnt by me).
@ BWK: nForce is the chipset with intergrated gfx. Made by nVidia. Everything is attached correctly as far as I know.

This is your MB, Correct Asus M4N68T-M

ASUS_M4N68T-M.JPG

This is a fairly new MB, it should have AHCI, SATA, & IDE options in the Bios setup.

The win7 boots ok as the first device selected on start-up ?

This is the 3rd ASUS MB problem with an OEM DVD install, I have seen in the past month. :( Not bashing them, just the facts I have seen, lately.

Or boot installer from a 4gb or larger flash stick: easiest method is to extract ISO from DVD using ImgBurn, install ultra ISO trial version, on File tab Open ISO, on Bootable tab Write Disk Image, Format, Write. Boot under USB or HD's.
