I keep three of the most recent copies of Windows Restore, but every month (could be more than a month) or so, They are deleted by a process which was not listed in the scheduled tasks. Highlighted the word "was" because some time ago I deleted the scheduled Windows cleanup entries in the schedule. Perhaps I missed one, but which?

Hi,
System restore points are not all that great to begin with they often leave fragments leading to other issues

It's best to take better control of system restore by using full system imaging whenever you want too and for as long as you have available disk space to store them

Most people here use macrium reflect free to do the job I am one of those people :)

Here's a tutorial although for win-10 it is no different for win-7

ThrashZone, thanks for your comments. I know that the System restore is not all that reliable, but twice it saved precious time, plus an important body part related to sitting. That is why I also like to keep a few recent copies on hand.

Yes, Macrium is the best! I do regular Macrium mirror backups of the system at least twice a week, and keep numerous copies stored on different drives. The same goes for important data drives, and there is no data on the system drive.

In fact, I also store perfect system mirrors on two separate Linux partitions, just in case. After all, what else can one do with 1.6 terabytes on three physical drives where only 300GB is in use, of which 130GB is from Internet Archive and Wikipedia?

Verify that you have your amount of disk space used for Restore Points set big enough.

At this time I have 19 Restore Points.

Hi Lay back bear. I have 9GB assigned to System restore, and my single System restore file is around 480MB. So, space was not the issue. According to this article, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2533911/windows-7-deletes-all-system-restore-points-upon-reboot the problem may have been a badly fragmented paging file. Although I defrag the drive once a week, nevertheless, I followed the instructions in the article, and will watch for the results. I also posted about this issue back in July 2016, Task scheduler process deletes old system restores? - Windows 7 Help Forums
