Windows 7 no longer genuine - error 0x80070005

after several years this morning, I got a black screen with a message saying the OS was not genuine. It is I have the retail upgrade disk in front of me. I upgraded from Vista. I tried several of the recommendations in various threads here all to no avail.

The activation application gives the error 0x80070005 "access denied" regardless of whether I try online activation or by phone. I even spent over an hour with MS tech support after I tried to activate by phone. They all agreed that my product key is good and they took remote control and tried a few things that didn't work. I've got a call scheduled tomorrow night with the next level of tech. Also my Office 2010 applications refuse to run with the following error: "...cannot verify license for this product....repair via control panel..." I did that as well and still get the same error. Don't think this is coincidental...

Any advice would be much appreciated. I backed up all "user" files just last night as well (coincident?) I'll start new if I have to but would rather not.

It's a Retail license - it won't have a COA, but should have a Proof of License card.

... is the cause of the failure here - the trick is to work out which permission is denied to what, where! ;)

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/2230957 may help
if not...
Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands

sc sdshow plugplay
REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-18" /S
REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-19" /S
REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-20" /S

Copy and paste the results to your reply
Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

I'm not sure what made the fixit fail in that way - I'll have to do some research and see if I can find out.

Norton is probably the cause of your problems - it has a habit of doing things like this.

I would suggest uninstalling Norton - at least temporarily, until we fix the problem - and running the Norton Removal tool, then reinstalling MSE until we fix things.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/nor...10133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.
then post another MGADiag report.

No joy. I uninstalled Norton and completed the remove tool. i also uninstalled the Aeomi Backupper software, which was the last software Installed. I also spent another two hours with MS tech support with no change. The final outcome from them was I need to repair install. But even that threw up an error becasue I have the OS on one disk and the user files on a second. At this point I guess it's a clean reinstall. I have a backup from two days ago so I have all the important files backed up. Here's the latest MSDIAG
