Hi, several years ago I purchased a refurbished Dell laptop.. It has been a great computer. Originally this laptop was built with Vista, but they refurbished it and made it win 7.. I have all the paper work on the laptop, and the refurbished info.. On the bottom of the computer are two windows tags, one has a clear sticker over it that has an X across it and says do not use,, and the second tag is Win 7, how ever it is very hard to read now with several years of moving around,, When I first received this computer I did write down the new product code for safe keeping and it activated when I entered it back then.. Recently I had a virus, could not get rid of it so I did a full recovery that is built in but after recovery is complete this product key no longer validates it..

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

The installed Key is the Default Key - which can never be activated.

The machine shipped with Vista installed, rather than Windows 7, so a factory recovery should have reinstalled Vista complete with Product Key - but this is a refurbished machine, so all bets are off.

You need to use the Key from the win7 sticker to re-activate - try using bright lights (and different colours) to read the Key. People have reported success using hi-def photos rather than just looking.
If you still can't read the Key, then I'm afraid it's going to be necessary to purchase a new license (or a new computer)

Thanks Noel, I will try to make sure the key is right, but I am pretty sure the product key I wrote is exactly the rite one for this copy of win 7. I wrote it the day it came in the mail, and I activated it from that key.. However that was 3 years ago, so why it wont activate now is a mystery.. There use to be a way to activate over the phone and get a new key if there is an issue with the one you have, but I don't see that option any more in the activation process..

Oh and if it would go back to vista that would have been ok, lol, but there is no recovery partition no cd no second drive that holds the recovery, every boot there is a option to boot to win 7 or recovery lol I never see that before, it is at every boot up>. Anyway Ill keep trying cause I can not afford a new computer this one is in such good shape yet///

Thanks anyway!!

The first thing to do is get the key installed.
I'll post detailed instructions later... (on phpne at present)

Hi Noel, sorry took me this long to get back here but work called me away, the issue is solved and thank you for you help on this.. I will tell you what I did, I used a yellow highlighter lightly swiping across the faded activation sticker then put it under a bright light, there was a G in the last set of digits, I thought, well it really was a 6... How crazy is that? lol

All is well I entered the 6 and wala!! Again thanks!!!
