Windows 7 on OLD computers

Hi all, thought I'd start a thread for those of us who are running older systems. Previously I was running XP SP3 on my Emachines M6805 Laptop. This system is about 5 or 6 years old. I didn't even try to load Vista on it. I have to say, 7 is smokin'. It is faster than XP in just about every aspect. Here's a shot of my config.

love my wacom pen and pressure sensitivity...
wished it worked in 7, SUSE for that matter though
I have one or two computers. One only has AGP slots for the graphics card. The card in question was an ATI 9600 Pro. It worked 100% in Vista 64 or 32 bit. I could not, after attempts with third party drivers, get it to perform with 7. Mainly it conflicted with pages running Java, so maybe Java was the real problem.
Anyway. The AGP cards seem to be neglected in driver updates, so I have put it to one side, purely for family use.

welcome thedpt to the forums

yeah am seeing this all the time

there is actuall a thread were you can post your wei

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/342-show-us-your-wei.html

I think this could be a good separate thread, one to post our trials of 7 on our old machines.

I have an OLD Dell desktop, sporting these specs, that I'm just itching to test on. Haven't gotten around to it yet, though.

930 MHz Pentium 3
384 MB ram
40 GB HDD

It is currently running XP Pro SP3 well, albeit a bit slow.

After I first installed Win7 a few days ago, I left Windows update off. I used Catalyst 8.11 Vista for my driver. After installing it I was able to bump my resolution up to 1280x800. Then I installed MModders driver and I was able to use Aero(with small line distortion in the glass).
After I activated Windows yesterday, I turned Windows updates on and low and behold, Microsoft sent me an updated driver for my graphics, sound, and ethernet controller. I still have issues with the glass, but I am amazed that MS is supporting this graphics card.
Also, I am running 7 on a P4 desktop. Windows sent a driver update for a PCI soundblaster 128. amazing.

Actually, I have an old Emachines laptop that I'm wanting to try it on. Specs are WAY worse than that, though, haha.

My computer is worst than yours, my WEI is 2.0

I am surprised I can even run Aero on it, and the thing is, it doesn't seem slow at all.

It's pretty amazing. It would seem that you can go a bit under the minimum system requirements and still have an enjoyable experience. When I installed 7, I only had 512mb of RAM and the OS was still faster than XP.

I'm running it on a Dell dimension 4600c, 2.4GHz P4, 512RAM, 80GB HDD and intel 82865g integrated graphics. It just FLEW running XP SP3, and its still pretty quick with 7. It was very pokey with Vista. I keep getting freezes when I try to run WEI updates, but I'm gonna try a tip I saw on here.

All 4 computers now on Win 7 HP. Daughters PC is Win 7, 2.8GHz P4, 1GB DDR,120GB HD. Sons PC is Win 7 HP, 2.26GHz P4, 1GB DDR, 240GB total HD, nVidia geforce 6200. My second computer is Win 7 HP, 2.0GHz AMD 64, 2000GB HD, 1GB DDR2, ATI x1300.
I would try this on my old and useless desktop: AMD Athlon XP 2000+, 256MB RAM, some old low-budget 128MB ATI Radeon video card. It will never work out, but there's nothing on that computer (I formatted the drives) so I'd like to see what happens. It doesn't have a DVD player, though so I can't install it.

Just mount the image using Daemon tools (or another program) and run setup from within XP/Vista. That's how I did mine.

I formatted the drives, so there's no way to do that :p

It must have upgraded, since it can't delete the OS from the OS itself.

I'm running it on a 2.0 GHz Athlon XP / MSI 6750 Mobo / 1Gig DDR 400 RAM/ NVidia 5700 AGP. Its running smoothly, haven't got much of a chance to mess with drivers and such though. Might try and run minimal Aero functions. Wondering if the Chipset drivers for the old Nvidia Chipsets will run....

Sorry, I should have specified.

I first made a 20GB partition, then installed it to that. Now I dual boot Vista and 7.
