Hello, my pc tries to do updates at shut down but they fail and it wont turn off.
I also can't install or update anything like java or adobe, I get errors.

I have installed the SURT tool, ran the SFC scan (no problems) but the CBS folder is 37.1 meg?
There are currently 19 failed updates, do you need the codes for all of them?

Thanks

If the file is too large (8MBcompressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file isbelow the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (theforum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

The main failing update is Service Pack 1

I suspect that your best option is going to be a repair install, as this error, while fairly common, has no known specific cure.

Thanks, SP1 was installed about 3 years ago and the PC has been fine since then, why would it be causing problems now? Could it be anything else?

Something else I have noticed, there are new folders appearing on my 2nd hard drive, this is todays: 3ba2b779ac589c1fa4cd0f9f
Heaps of others with similar long names, I have no idea how they are getting there or what's in them.

Those folders are being created by abortive attempts to install updates - it's normal for Windows to put them in the drive with the most free space. We can worry about cleanup after we solve the basic problem.

You say that SP1 is installed?
Please post the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file

Yep - that's the file I need.
It sounds as if it's the SP1installer patch itself that is causing problems here - it's a fairly common problem, but one which I've never see a satisfactory cure for, apart from a repair install. :(

The problem updates are all failing with 0x8024200B or 0x80070643 errors - since most seem to be related to Office, let's check that the OSE service is allowed to run properly.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands..

SC QC OSE
SC QUERYEX OSE

post the results.

Here are some instructions to make lifeeasier :)

1) To open anElevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs,Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run asAdministrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

2) To run thecommands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on thehighlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at topleft – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the lastcommand, so hit the Enter Key once.

3) To copy theresults... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit...'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to pasteit into your response.

It's not only Office, there are Windows updates - .NET Framework and Microsoft Security Essentials.
I have tried installing them one at a time and all together but they fail.

Sorry about the delay - it was a rather busy week/end.
There doesn't seem to be any problem with your output there - although it may be a little odd that there has been no attempt to start the service, that may simply be because none of the Office apps have been opened since the last reboot.

I still come back to that odd error with the SP1 pre-requisite - it's one that I see every now and then, and have never managed to get to the bottom of, and my only fix for it is a repair install. :(
