Hi, I'm new.

Right now, I'm really worried. I just bought Windows 7 Ultimate from Ebay, installed it and everything works fine. I tried the Product Key that came with it, but it said on the computer that it was blocked. That's ok, since it said on the page that it wouldn't work.

So I went to a website called Windows 7 Key Sale,Cheap Windows 7 Serial Key,Windows 7 Product Key Store!. as it was the first thing in google. I bought the Windows 7 product key, and I should get it soon.#

Bad Move.

I didn't realise I had service pack 1... it came with the Discs... FML.

Is there any way I can delete service pack 1 before the disk gets here so it will actually work? Thanks so much if you can help.

Microsoft has said that these keys won't work with SP1 windows. :(

A product key number will activate the Windows 7 with or without SP1 installed.

However, that 2nd site is a pretty questionable website, and would have my suspicions if that product key number was legit or not as well.

Getting your Windows 7 from places like these is quite risky. They have a high risk of being fake, illegal, and loaded with a virus to top it off. It's always best to get your copy of Windows 7 from a more legit retailer, or directly from Microsoft.

That's what's on there. If it isn't legit, then I should be able to get my money back, right? Sigh.

What website should I be using for this kind of stuff?

And can I uninstall SP1 if it came with the disc?!

Any site can post that to make themselves appear more legit. If they are a reputable company, then you should be able to get your money back or an exchange. However, with a website name like that, it just screams to be a "SCAM" or illegal IMO.

As for other websites, any reputable established retailer (ex: Newegg, Amazon, etc...), or at the Microsoft Store. You can Google the company or site name to see reviews and more information about them.

No, you will not be able to uninstall SP1 if it came preinstalled with the Windows 7 installation disc. However, as I posted above, a product key number is not limited by SP1. It will activate Windows 7 with or without SP1 as long as the key is valid.

Windows 7 activation error: invalid product key

If you receive an error indicating that your product key is not valid when installing Windows 7, it could be for the following reasons:

You might have mistyped your product key. Try retyping it.

You might be using a product key that doesn't match the version of Windows 7 that's installed on your computer. Check the product key to make sure it is for the version that you are trying to activate. You can't use a product key for Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) to activate a copy of Windows 7 without SP1.

That's what I found, though :/

And if what you say is true, how will a simple product key install a virus on my PC? And will Norton stop it?

I'm not referring to the product key, but the copy of Windows 7 that could come preloaded with a virus if that copy of Windows 7 is not legit.

Your's has SP1 included, so you have nothing to worry about. The edition (ex: Ultimate) that the product key number is for must be for the same edition of Windows 7, but I personally have never had a issue using a "retail" product key number to activate my "retail" copy of Windows 7 with or without SP1 already installed.

Oh. Um, how will I get my money back, then?

If anything, this will teach me a lesson. Trust nobody :D

Yeah, so is there any way I can get paypal to give me my money back?

Paypal doesn't have your money, the crooks who ripped you off have your money. You can try to contest the charge through Paypal but the chances are that the crooks will simply disappear, then reappear tomorrow under a new name.

How long do you think Microsoft would be able to make money selling products at their website if it were common knowledge - and legit - for other outfits to sell keys at a greatly reduced rate?

I'm sorry this happened to you and wish you luck with contesting the charge. If nothing else, you may at least make it a little more difficult for these guys to pull the same trick on someone else.

Sigh. Oh well. Maybe I'll get it, maybe I won't.

It's only around 28 dollars, so it was around £17 over here.

I went overdrawn because of this, but it's not a huge deal. :(

Thanks for the help. If I don't get it, does anybody know a legit website where I can buy Windows 7 product keys?

You've got to be KIDDING me! I can't JUST buy a product key?

Do I seriously have to buy an additional entire new Windows?

I just spent £65 on Windows Ultimate, I can't afford to buy a new one!

This is so unfair... is there anywhere I can buy JUST a product key, or something like that?

Yeah, it sucks when you get burned by buying illegal copies and product keys, but that's what usually happens. :(

When you purchase Windows 7, it's the product key (license) that you are really paying for to activate Windows 7 with. You shold have never ordered a copy of Windows 7 that didn't come with a legal valid product key number. A big red flag.

The Windows Ultimate you bought was probably a leaked corporate or student version. Once Microsoft spots something fishy they kill the key. For instance, the XYZ Corporation of Cleveland, Ohio buys a corporate key for their headquarters office. Then suddenly the key is being activated all across the country and in 52 different nations around the world.

I would be pretty sure that you were ripped off on that one, too...

There is the thing I bought it off... I think that the version itself is fine personally, but I wouldn't know.

There's got to be something I can do... come on, I can't just have bought something and then just have it gone... please?

I really can't afford another windows, this cost lots.

Does anybody know what happens when the activation things run out and it "disables certain features?"? Because I might be able to live with it, until I raise enough money

The disc you bought is worth about as much as a blank DVD, maybe even less since you might be able to use the blank DVD for something useful. It should have been a warning when they told you that the included key was blocked. If you had a valid Windows Ultimate key you could just borrow a Windows disc from a friend and you'd be fine.

I haven't used eBay for years and can't get to the link you provided. Can you give the actual name of the vendor?

PS: Communicating over the Internet can sometimes conceal the tone of the person posting. I hope my comments don't sound harsh - I'm disgusted with the thieves, not with you. :)

Yeah, ok.

Last night, I was really worried, and upset. I just got an email from the guy giving the product key, and it said -

Sorry for the late reply, here is your key,plz check it.Thank you for your support.

The Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Product Key is:

** REMOVED KEY **

Our key is genuine key.It can only work with the retail offical version very well not with OEM version and Trial version.

Have a nice day. If you have any question, plz feel free to contact us.

Btw, his 'not so correct spelling' may be due to the fact that he's Asian.(it showed me his name).
I tried it, and it didn't work. He did say OFFICIAL version, and mine isn't(I thought it was, I didn't mean to pirate)... so maybe he isn't a crook after all.

My plan now is to postpone the activation for 120 days, so I can raise enough money for the official, real one. Thanks for the help everyone, you've been really supporting and I know I'll definitely come back here for any other queries I have about Windows.

'Our key' - immediate flag!
Once they sold it to you it became 'Your Key' - and they should not have it any more. This indicates to me that it's probably an abused MSDN Key.
If you post an MGADiag report, we can tell you for sure....
To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
