Windows 7 resets priority of Wireless over Ethernet Connection

Hi,
I am trying to make it so that Windows 7 will automatically prefer a wired internet connection over wireless when I connect an ethernet cable to my computer.

I was able to follow the instructions here:

But it looks like after some period of time, Windows resets the order of preference of my connections to what it was before. Is there some fix for this issue?

What are the speeds of the wired and wireless connection? Windows should use the one with the most amount of possible bandwidth. Normally this is wired however if you are using newer wireless standards then it may prefer that.

I just read the link you posted that is not the way to do it as far as I know about that it is just changing the way windows handles dns queries , what you want to do is called change the

Metric

To do this you have to change the metric in your lan and wifi . Give your prefered way to connect a lower number (eg 1 for lan and 10 for wifi)

1. Open the Network Connections folder (Start > Run > ncpa.cpl) (You can also get there way he described)
2. Right click the desired connection.
3. Click Properties > Internet Protocol Version 4.
4. Click Properties > Advanced.
5. Un-check "Automatic metric".
6. Enter a number between 1 and 9999 for the "Interface metric".

Thank you for your replies. I tried changing the metric but it appears not to have made a difference. Strangely after doing so, if I turn off my wifi on my laptop the connection goes to wired connection. But if I turn wifi back on, then the connection goes to back to wifi.

Try entering 10 for the wired metric and 25 for the wireless metric. From what I read entering 1 or 10 might not work.

You can see the metrics for both connections by using the route print command, see the 10 for wired and the 20 for wireless, this is supposed to work from what I have read.

This should cause the wired connection to be first unless there is something wrong with the wired connection.

I heard the same thing but the person that did what you said set it around 20 and 99, in my case 1 and 10 worked fine

Hi, thank you for your replies, I have tried the suggestions and none appear to help me after I restart my computer. I don't know if it is an issue with my wired connection. It appears to work fine though, and more reliable than my wifi signal which can fade in and out during the day.
