this is a sketch of what works for me for a 64bit machine:

  • 1) unplug ethernet cable
  • 2) fresh install of Win7SP1 from DVD
  • 3) run systeminfo.exe, which reports two KBs already installed: KB2534111, KB976902
  • 4) download/install Servicing Stack Update: windows6.1-kb3020369-x64_5393066469758e619f21731fc31ff2d109595445.msu
  • 5) download/install July Update: windows6.1-kb3172605-x64_26f4cc7831a0d76393445b7b0a1a3ed5cd5b4047.msu
  • 6) run systeminfo.exe, which reports 4 KBs installed
  • 7) plug in ethernet cable
  • 8) run Windows Update (takes 14 minuites, finds 152 critical updates)
  • 9) click install (takes 54 minutes to download and install)
there are other steps intermingled, such as antivirus, hardware drivers, etc..., but thats the sketch.

The critical steps are starting with Win7SP1, then installing KB302036 and KB3172605 before running WU.

There is also a Convenience Update that can be installed after step 5.
