Hi

These are the details from the update history:

"Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)

Installation date: ‎2015/‎05/‎20 12:11 PM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 80073701"

As far as I can tell it has something to do with IE 9 which I am unable to uninstall - it does not appear in the list of installed programs.

I have run the system update readiness tool (Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu) and sfc /scannow. I have attached the CBS.log as instructed here : http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...4840-windows-update-posting-instructions.html.

Hope someone can help (I saw a very similar error with an apparently happy ending on these forums).

Regards
Alex

We don't often see this type of error!

Someone appears to have deliberately renamed a file - which takes a little doing, considering the protections operating in the Winsxs folder!

Having said that, it's the only error that CheckSUR found.
The errors in the CBS.log can usually be ignored, and there's no problems found in the SFC scan.

Ah...

It looks to me like running CheckSUR should have fixed this problem?

If not, please explain the current blockage.

Hi Noel

This laptop has always belonged to me and I didn't do any renaming (that I remember!). Actually the reason I came to this forum was that google showed someone who had the same symptoms - and whom it looks like you helped - http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...2033-windows-update-failing-continuously.html.

I have run CheckSUR a few times, and then the SP1 update and the update always fails with the same error. I am not sure what you mean by "explain the current blockage"? I can't!

As I said I cannot uninstall IE9 which looks like it may be linked to this hassle. In the dim and distant past I rolled back SP1 when it first came out as it broke my printer driver at the time. Don't know if that has any bearing? I have never been able to apply the update since but I didn't much care - now I want install Visual Studio 2013 and I can't (my normal laptop has died - it's a miserable tale of woe).

Thank you for answering, you appear to be tireless on these forums!

Regards
Alex

Let's take a look at a couple more files...

Please upload the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

I think I see what the problem is - CheckSUR is actually attempting to repair the wrong file!

Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt, and post the results...

Code:
DIR C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Optional-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~8.0.7600.16385.*

DIR C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\*.*old0

.

Post the results, reboot, and run another CheckSUR scan and post the new CheckSUR.log file.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Post the results - we shouldn't need another CheckSUR after that.

Then do a Check for Updates, and attempt to install ONLY the oldest update found - what happens?

Hi

What happens? Unfortunately the update failed with Code 80073701. SP1 was the only non-optional update.

I have uploaded CBS.zip being the zip of CBS.log.

Alex

Not totally unexpected :(

I'm at a loss to understand this one at the moment, and need to do some research :(

You may want to consider a Repair install of Windows if you have access to the Win7 media

Thank you Noel, I tried a suggestion I found here:

IE9 RC uninstall freezes at the end on Windows 7 x64 - Microsoft Community

I downloaded:
windows6.1-kb972813-x64-en-us_483a3e51038f1a369bc5b5cdf5fc32df3ea4ad27.exe

and extracted lp.cab and ran this command at an elevated command prompt:

Code:
"dism /online /add-package /packagepath:lp.cab"

Then I tried the update, and for the first time it actually went ahead, I thought my problems were finally over!

However at some point during the process after serveral reboots it had to roll back the update : ( The CBS.log is now a hefty 300Mb - but at one point I thought it was stuck in a loop, and my machine might be totalled. So, I'm grateful for small mercies.

Looks like your suggestion of doing a repair install is my only option - time to go and buy some DVD's and hope lenovo have got it right. Thanks for your help.

Regards
Alex

DISM does NOT work the same way in Windows 7 as it does in Win 8!

Please start the whole process again with a new set of diagnostics - maybe we can avoid the hassle of a repair install..

SFC is error-free, as is CheckSUR.
The error message implies registry corruption, which would normally be found by CheckSUR unless buried in the SOFTWARE hive rather than the COMPONENTS hive.

I'm neither competent nor confident in that hive :(

The first significant error from your latest attempt to install SP1 is this...
Code:
2015-05-25 11:20:21, Info CBS SPI: Self trust verification failed for C:\Windows\System32\SPC_SP1_Wave1.xml. 0x57

... which tends to suggest a corrupt download - I assume this was from the full standalone download?

Hi Noel

Which standalone download are you asking about? If you mean SP1 it is not from the download, but via automatic updates (they download automatically but are not installed automatically).

Is the standalone download a better idea?

Alex

OK, I am sure my 4Mbit (really 1.6Mbit) ADSL will make short work of it.
