Hello, I've been trying to install Windows 7 SP1 and I'm getting the 80073712 error.

I have run the System Update Readiness Tool and have the following output in CheckSUR.log (pasted below)

Can anyone help me obtain these manifest files and repair the install?

Thanks so much in advance, I would really appreciate any help!

Hi Crashkm, welcome to Seven Forums,

I've been trying to install Windows 7 SP1 and I'm getting the 80073712 error.

Do you mean a clean install?
Where did you get Windows 7 SP1 from?

I'm doing this through Windows Update. Here is the complete error detail from Windows Update:

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)

Installation date: ‎6/‎7/‎2018 11:15 PM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 80073712

Update type: Important

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is a recommended collection of updates and improvements to Windows that are combined into a single installable update. Hi Crashkm,

Does this mean that you have a Windows installation DVD that DOESN'T include SP1?
If so, you might as well start off with an ISO that includes SP1 already.

You can download the Windows 7 ISO file from here: TechBench

Then use the following information:

Windows [Final] > Windows 7 SP1 [build 7601] > Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 > English > Win_Ult_SP1_English_x64.iso

Obviously change the language and bit type to suit.

Once downloaded, extract the contents of the ISO using something like 7-Zip and then either delete or rename the ei.cfg [ISO > Sources > ei.cfg] file [this will make all versions of Windows 7 available] from the ISO and either burn it [you can't just copy and paste it because it won't work] to a DVD or USB ready for the clean installation.

You could also use the ei.cfg removal utility: eicfg_removal_utility.zip

Note: If the version of Windows you are installing is Windows 7 Ultimate then there is NO need to remove the ei.cfg file as instructed above.

To burn a DVD you could use the Windows 7 built in ISO burner.
To burn to a USB you could either use: Rufus 2.18 or Rufus 2.18 Portable.

On the installation you can select whatever version of Windows 7 you have a valid Product Key for. This is also the only version you will be able to activate.

IMPORTANT: Make sure that you backup ALL your data before you start a clean install because during the clean install process ALL data will be erased and become irretrievable.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the detailed info, I have burned the .iso and will try the install this weekend.

I was hoping there would be a way to fix the SP1 update so I wouldn't need to do a clean Windows install, but if that's the only way I'll give it a try.

You are welcome.

As I said in my previous post, does this mean that you are running a Windows 7 installation that DOESN'T include SP1?

I don't quite understand what you are trying to do and why you need to fix the SP1 update!

I'm currently running Windows 7 without SP1, and I don't have an install disk (but I do have my Product Key.)

I am trying to use Windows Update to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932). Windows Update is unable to install SP1 due to the error code mentioned above.

Hi Crashkm,

I'm currently running Windows 7 without SP1.

I am trying to use Windows Update to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932).

That is very unusual indeed because the final version of SP1 was released to the public on the 22nd of February 2011 and was last updated on the 31st of May 2011.

What does it say when you click Start > right click Computer and select Properties? Does it say SP1 installed? Does it say 64-bit or 32-bit?

Are you saying that you have been running your Windows 7 without ever doing any updates? This seems to be the case because in order to do any updates SP1 HAS to be installed FIRST.

I hope this helps!

Yes, I understand this is unusual, I'm trying to update an old computer which hasn't been updated in quite some time.

It's running Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit. SP1 is not installed.

Hi Crashkm,

I'm trying to update an old computer which hasn't been updated in quite some time.

I understand now that your computer hasn't been updated in the last eight years or so.
I would strongly suggest that you clean install and follow my post #4 to save yourself a lot of time and grief.

I have burned the .iso and will try the install this weekend.

Good luck!
