Windows 7 Startup Sound hangs/glitches after installing Samsung SSD

Hi Guys,

I have a new Dell Latitude E6540 that I bought a few months ago and after upgrading the hard drive I have noticed that the windows 7 startup sound now hangs/glitches when I boot my machine.

Here are the specs:

4th Gen 2.7Ghz Intel Core i7 4800MQ
12gb PC3-12800 DDR3 Ram
120gb Samsung EVO 840 mSATA SSD
2tb Samsung Spin Point (Seagate Momentus) SATA HDD
AMD Radeon HD 8790M Dedicated Graphics
Intel 4600 Integrated Graphics
RealTek High Definition Audio
Windows 7 PRO x64 Bit


Using the original 500gb Seagate HDD and the operating system/drivers that came preinstalled with my machine when I purchased it back in june, everything worked fine.

In fact, I left the original HDD completely intact when I installed the SSD and have tested my hardware by putting the original drive back in to see if the startup chime was now hanging/glitching on it, but it still works just fine.

But as soon as I put my SSD and 2tb HDD back into the machine I get the glitch again.

I used the OEM reinstallation CD to install my copy of Windows 7 PRO x64 Bit, but I don't have the original driver disk and downloaded all drivers directly from the Dell support website in order to get it all up and running.

I did grab both the Intel and AMD graphics drivers directly from their websites to get the most recent copy, but other than that I would assume I used the same drivers that came pre-installed on my machine. (Although I noticed that the newer graphics drivers dropped my gaming and windows aero points down by .2 on the Windows Experience Index.)

Would the decreased startup time from the SSD cause this?

Can I pull the driver out from my old drive and move it over to the SSD?

I searched around and the best alternative I've seen is to disable the startup chime....

Which I guess isn't the worst thing I could do, but I'd rather just figure out how to resolve the issue instead.

My bets would be that it is a driver issue, but I have tried re-installing a few different realtek drivers and no luck so far.

Anyone else had this problem with the Dell Latitude E6540 or any other Windows 7 machine for that matter?

Any help, comments or signs pointing me in the right direction is much appreciated.

First thing to do is go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the sound (RealTek) to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This may put the sound in a different point in the startup or even on a different shared IRQ and fix the problem.

I have SSD and do not have the sound problem on startup so its not because of the SSD.

I uninstalled the Realtek Driver from the control panel, which caused my computer to lose sound. Then, after a reboot, Windows detected my sound card and installed drivers from Windows Update. This made the startup chime better, but it still has a small glitch and now some newly added popping noises unfortunately.

Also, the popping noises come up in more than one system chime now. I just noticed the new popping noise in the security alert when installing programs for instance. I think I'd rather reinstall the Realtek driver and disable the startup chime rather than hear these popping noises on all of the Windows system chimes. I'm going to look around for a better solution and keep you guys posted on a possible fix or if I choose the solution listed above. Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it.

I suspect some Dell driver has not been installed. Dell's can be cranky about drivers. I have done work on the Dell forums since 2002 and have seen a lot of problems because of drivers or the way the drivers were installed on Dell PC's.

Although Windows 7 will install many device drivers, I would still install the Dell supplied drivers. Having an SSD should not change anything other than faster loading. I have no difference in my systems whether I boot from an SSD or conventional hard drive.

On a Dell, the correct install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Dell Laptop (or desktop as applicable) System Software (3) Install motherboard chipset drivers (4) Install device drivers including Video, Dell Sound drivers, Ethernet, etc.

Also be aware that Dell modify some of there drivers so they are bespoke to their systems, it may pay you to try using the genuine dell ones if possible
I cant see the chipset drivers wold make any difference but audio and gfx may

One of the things the chipset drivers do is properly identify the devices on the motherboard. Thus I would first reinstall the chipset drivers.
