Windows 7 student upgrade install problems

I'm having this problem as well. I'm working on burning the ISO right now, but I the "unblock" button does not appear in the properties window for any of the three downloaded files. Should I just proceed with the other steps without unblocking? Thanks.

Hi Mightypants (I like your name..) :)
That is a file property, maybe they are already unblocked? Were you able to do it once?
I myself haven't seen the application, but I suspect that if you just proceed and it works, you are fine. If there is a problem it will probalby stop you before you can complete it. Then please come back, there are other members that have more experience how to deal with it.
But wait, you say you are burning the iso already, so you have gotten to the end of the process, right? I suspect they were already unblocked.
Let us know

Can you post a picture of what you get when you do:
1. Rt click each file, Properties > Unblock > Apply > OK

Sorry, I'm primarily a mac guy and don't know how to do a screen shot. The problem is that the "Unblock" button simply doesn't appear.

Update: I followed the directions up to the command line portion, and am now getting an error on that command. Below is what I entered and the error message I received:
C:\Windows\system32>Oscdimg.exe -u2 -b"C:\Users\The J-Slice\Desktop\expandedSetu
p\boot\etfsboot.com" -h "C:\Users\your_username\Desktop\expandedSetup" C:\7.iso

Is this because there is a dash in my username? If so, what is the appropriate syntax? Thanks.

I copied and pasted from my Mac browser too. see the û in the error line? It's put in a different character instead of a hyphen. I had this problem, but fixed it by deleting and retyping all spaces and hyphens in the command. Then worked perfectly.
If you're installing under VMWare Fusion, see my guide:

Mightypants. I had the same problem. Here is how to fix that.

All you need to do is instead of copying and pasting the osc code. You have to MANUALLY enter the code. The dashes in your name don't matter, that's fine. Manually enter the osc address line and it will work.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was able to create the ISO by typing in the whole command. Next question, once the ISO is finished burning, can I run the installation from Vista or do I need to boot from the disc? Mac users, does restarting and holding option key work for this (i.e. will the disc be recognized as bootable)? Thanks.

I guess you're trying to install this in your boot camp partition on a Mac. I have no idea if the iso will be bootable, I'm afraid, as my sole interest was getting it running in vmWare. I would guess that it is bootable, but please report back if it is or isn't.
If you couldn't run the updater in Vista (your Vista is 32 bit, your Win 7 is 64 bit, perhaps) then you'll NEED to boot from it. At that point you've got two options.
1. If you can boot from the disk, you should be able to erase and clean install over your Vista. Make sure you've backed up. Your upgrade product key should work as expected.
2. If you can't boot from the disk, you may be able to boot from it by using the boot camp utility. This may mean deleting your boot camp partition (backup first) and installing as if to a fresh drive. In which case, your product key won't work, as no previous version of Windows will be found by the installer. In which case, use this workaround:

Good luck, and report back!

Okay, I was able to boot from the disk, but now I seem to have encountered another problem. After selcting my language and continuing, I received a message saying I was missing a device driver. I clicked okay and now it says "select the driver to be installed and a loading bar keeps cycling through and I'm getting the spinning cursor. Any thoughts?

I expect this is due to lack of support for Win7 in Boot Camp. To be fair, Apple say that they will support Windows 7 in Boot Camp in Snow Leopard by the end of the year (hope you haven't got one of the unsupported MacBook Pros like I have):
About Boot Camp and Windows 7

So I'm not sure you'll get it working in Boot Camp at the moment. If you're keen to try Windows 7, it'll have to be as a virtual machine. If you don't want to pay for Parallels or vmWare, try VirtualBox. I believe that supports Win 7. To be honest, unless you're playing games in Windows so need to boot natively for full performance, a virtual machine will bring you one step closer to severing your links with Windows anyway. It's how I use my Mac!

Once you have installed as a virtual machine, the next problem will be authorisation, as you'll have no access to a previous Windows installation to authorise your upgrade. So, to authorise Windows 7, you'll need to follow this guide:
http://community.winsupersite.com/b...-windows-7-with-upgrade-media-the-answer.aspx
I've just tried this out, and it works!

I'm debating about taking advantage of the Windows 7 Ultimate Steal for students, but after reading all these messages, I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle.

If I buy the student deal, would it just be easier to download a Windows 7 installation ISO from a torrent site to use with the product key from the student deal? Will the product key from the student deal work with a regular install DVD?

Yes, it would potentially be easier, but you open yourself up to two problems.
1. Do you trust iso installers that you download from torrent sites? How do you know that it hasn't been messed about with? Say, for example, capture your product key and send it to someone else?
2. I'm sure it would be against Microsoft's EULA to redistribute an iso on a torrent site. While I personally have nothing against this, I still wouldn't do it. And more and more people are getting caught doing this.

It really isn't that difficult to 'roll-your-own' iso, and burn a DVD installer. If it seems like too much hassle, buy the student version and order the disk set. At least you'll know your installer comes straight from Microsoft, and for me that's worth the peace of mind.

Ginjaian, thanks for all the help. I know that Apple doesn't officially support W7 with boot camp, but many people are using it without problems. I got past that last problem by rebooting and starting the installation again, but now I've encountered a new problem (surprise!). Installation begins and everything seems to be going fine, then the computer begins to restart as expected, but it ends up rebooting in OSX. Any ideas?

Yes, I was wrong about NO ONE being able to install Windows 7 in boot camp. It turns out that only some Macs can install the Win7 64 bit version at the moment, and Apple will add more later with an update to Boot Camp; see list here (says Vista, but should also be okay with Win7):
Boot Camp: Mac computers that work with 64-bit editions of Microsoft Windows Vista

There's a good write up of installing Win 7 here, but I assume they're using the 32 bit version:
How to Survive Boot Camp (and Run Win 7 on a Mac) - Boot Camp - Gizmodo

Now, to your actual problem, which I think is covered in the guide above. To select which OS to boot, you need to hold down the option/Alt key, literally as you press the power button. This gives a choice of boot disks, Mac OS will be one, Windows will be the other. This might be the same as how you were getting into your old Vista boot camp installation.

Hope that helps!

Okay, I finally got everything working. My last problem was apparently caused by the fact that I had rebooted directly from the burned disc, rather than going from the Boot Camp setup assistant.

Bonus: I was able to activate without any workarounds. That was good news.

HAHAHAHA. "Dark Side" is the name I gave to my Vista Partition. To be fair, I started out using PCs/Windows and have continued to do so even though my main setup is Mac OSX at this point.
