Solved Windows 7 suddenly not genuine after a year, error code 0xC004F200

Yesterday I was browsing on the internet like I usually do, when suddenly my desktop screen turned black and some white text appeared above the clock in the botom right-hand corner saying "This copy of Windows is not genuine." I also get a message every time I log in saying that I may be using a counterfeit version of Windows. I have never had anything like this since I installed an OEM version Windows 7 on a new computer I built for myself in late 2015.

I have tried re-entering the product key but it says that the key has been blocked by Microsoft. Phone activation does not work either, and when I called Microsoft I was told that the product key had been used several times so it has been blocked. I don't understand how this happened as I have only ever installed it on 1 computer. Clicking on the option to resolve online upon login fails too, with attempts to validate Windows using the Windows Activation Technologies never getting past the updates part - a popup saying "Optional update delivery is not working. You may be a victim of software counterfeiting." always appears.

Hi Kwamster,

Its actually counterfiet on 2 counts.
The OS and your Office Pro.

The key in use for your OS has been "lifted" from the COA sticker on another computer.
Its for an OEM, ie factory built, computer and you stated you built it yourself.
This makes it a Retail model and you need a System Builder or Retail licence.

As for Office thats validating, trying to, against a blocked server, using a counterfiet product key.

Im surprised that you havn't seen the non-genuine pop-up before

So its time to buy genuine, you could try Box.com or Novatech, but they only supply Pro about £130 thats just for the OS. Buy off the web and you could be back again.

Thank you Roy, didn't realise Microsoft Office was counterfeit as well.

I'm just curious, but why did it take over a year for my copy of Windows 7 to be found as counterfeit?

I think I will try to upgrade to Windows 10. Am I correct in believing that installing a genuine retail version of Windows 10 Home on my computer would remove the error messages?

Also, by "off the web", does this include sites like Amazon?

Dont know why it didnt report before, hence my earlier comment.
In reality it could be a number of things.

A genuine W10 yes, as your overwriting whats on the computer now.
trying to upgrade with what you have now will also fail

Amazon in its own right yes, and companies on it.
i would steer clear of individules using thier marketplace same for Ebay.
