Windows 7 system repair screwed everything up

So yesterday I was online and uploaded a pic to Twitpic. Everything froze up so after a bit I decided to restart. When it restarted it went right into system repair. I let that run ALL NIGHT LONG. In the morning, it asked if I wanted to do a system restore and I said yes. But it said I had no restore points. I knew that wasn't right so I ran through the memory check option and then the hard drive check and was told memory was fine but now I don't have a hard drive found or an operating system. Any clue what has happened or how to restore everything????

Do you get an error message at startup that may help diagnose the problem?

It sounds possible that you may have a failed hard drive. If you know the manufacturer of your hard drive, I could help point you in the right direction for a hard drive test.

Start up message

It said initially Windows didn't start up correctly and I needed to run the System Repair. I ran it and it ran so long I thought it was locked up. In the morning it asked me to do the system restore. That didn't work so I had to hit ESC and it gave me the option to run a memory test that came out fine but the hard drive test said I had no hard drive or operating system. I have worried something got clobbered when I restarted after it had frozen up initially. Other than that, no start up error messages, no blue screens, etc.

Make sure all connections to the hard drive are securely attached, both to the HD and the Motherboard. Put in either the installation DVD or the restore CD. Boot from the CD, at the first screen hold down shift and press F10, you should get a command prompt window, type diskpart press enter, wait for it to respond then type list disk press enter. It should show every disk in your computer. See if you see your hard drive and look at the size. Type exit enter and type exit enter again. you will be back at the select language screen. Close it and tell us what it showed.

Also run Startup Repair from Disk which isn't dependent upon System Files which might be corrupt or not being read on the HD. Let us know the results of several repeated DVD/Repair CD Repairs.

Startup Repair should automate System Restore but run it from the System Recovery Options separately if not. Always make sure SysRestore is on with plenty of disk space apportioned.

Next burn to CD and run HD maker's extended diagnostic/repair CD scan: HD Diagnostic, followed by Disk Check from the DVD/Repair CD Command Line. The combination of these two tests run correctly can repair and return to use a HD, or at least pronounce it dead.

System Repair problems

After hours of screwing with this, it's now apparant I've had a complete hard drive failure. Surprising since it's only an 8 month old laptop. At least it's under warranty.

Sorry to hear that. It's good that it is under warranty. The hard drive is definitely one of the components most likely to fail so it's not too surprising for 8 months but that's still rough. I've had multiple drives fail within a couple months or weeks even.

Did you confirm this with the HD Diagnostics linked earlier?
