Windows 7: The Five Most Talked-About Features

Windows 7 is proving a divisive subject even in its infancy. One example: Last week, reviews from CIO.com's sister sites, Computerworld and InfoWorld, offered radically different opinions about what Microsoft has in store for the successor of Windows Vista, expected to ship in early 2010.
Depending on where you look, Windows 7 is being called a savior for the embattled Vista, or a disaster waiting to happen. Regardless, certain interface features in Windows 7, whether brand new or streamlined, have been mostly applauded by experts who have tested the pre-beta.
Which features are the most interesting and controversial? Here are five that deserve your attention:
Revamped User Account Control

Vista's well-intentioned security feature UAC (User Account Control), perhaps the operating system's most despised feature, became an easy target for Apple's "I'm a Mac" ads. Users were driven nuts by UAC's frequent pop-up prompts seeking confirmation before allowing programs to open.
In Windows 7, Microsoft gives more control over UAC to the user, so there will be fewer prompts. If the user makes any of the changes that Vista has been prompting, such as changing the date or time, Windows 7 will leave it alone.
In his review of the Windows 7 pre-beta, Computerworld's Preston Gralla commends the improvements made to UAC. "It rarely gets in your way—you get a prompt only when a program tries to make changes to your PC. If you make them yourself, it allows you to go ahead."
With Windows 7, Microsoft has dropped the "on or off only" approach of Vista and made UAC customizable.
There will now be four settings: Never notify; only notify me when programs try to make changes to my computer; always notify me; always notify me and wait for my response.
Improved Taskbar.....

Revamped User Account Control? Even though it has been improved a whole lot, I still turned it off. It's just too naggy about everything. And It has yet to ever prompt me on files that are trying to change the system that I did not open myself. So, I turned it off with no regrets cause I still have MSE.

And same, I don't use Homegroup and also Touch Screen.

The Taskbar is a great Mac OS X Dock- like feature that can be highly regarded.

um yeah there should be more than 4 as i can see in the second page where he is talking about homegroups then moves to libraries, that it all has to do with the network but these are two separate features.

clearly he thought that it was more than 3 pages but i guess it was a few words too short....:p

and in my opinion device stage should be up there
Device Stage – A New Way of Interacting with Devices in Windows 7 - Windows Experience Blog - The Windows Blog

wifi integration is a "God-Send" and i love it!
that it does what no other app (some linux distros have it but not as intergrated as windows does it)
those are two features that i think would be on top of the most talked about features along with those already specified...

You should buy some more... It's really fun when you get to do multiple Windows 7 installations. It's even more fun to remote desktop into a computer in the back room from your laptop while you sit on the couch watching tv on your Media Center... Just sayin...

Clearly, Windows 7's speediness needs to be in the Top 5.

I am not smart enough to use Homegroup. I just network the way I always have and disable the two homegroup services. I think I missed something. I am not even certain what problem Homegeoups solved.

Homegroup is the easier to setup and use version of Workgroups. When you install your OS, you automatically create a homegroup on your network. When you install Seven on another computer on that same network, it will see your homegroup. You put in the password, and its DONE! Thats it! That is all you need to do to network all your home PCs together!

UAC

Being one who has usually turned off User Account Control in frustration with Vista I thought I'd give it a go in Windows 7 but set it to the first position up.
It was not too intrusive so I kept it set that way then later I went to use UltraISO and I wanted to burn a disk or a USB key but it wouldn't let me!!!

I actually had to run UltraISO as 'Run as Administrator' to allow me to burn with it!
So what have I done? - Set UAC to zero i.e. Off ! :D

Mine works with no prompt. Set it back to the default level and you should be fine.
