Windows 7 Ultimate x64 key won't activate now that it's virtualized

Hello. I have a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 that I purchased years ago. I've never had a problem activating it. It is a legitimate, genuine copy of Win7.

As support for Windows 7 is coming to an end, I updated to Windows 10, but my PC's graphics card and Windows 10 do not work well together. I installed Linux on the computer instead and installed Windows 7 as a VM on the Linux installation.

Now that it's being VMed, my Windows 7 key will no longer activate my purchased, genuine, copy of Windows 7.


I originally had 4 (apparently pretty common) File mismatches, but was able to fix that issue with an update. The validation issue is still ongoing, however.

Welcome to the forum. The windows is an OEM version and may not activate unless on makers BIOS

Thanks. This is a custom-built PC, though.

The key is OEM some are tried to a bios of the oem have you used this key on another pc if so it wont activate as you can only use it on 1 pc. There is a script which may activate it if its genuine GitHub - mosesIRL/Windows7-OEM-Activator-old: Restore OEM Windows 7 activation

REBOOT >> TWICE <<

rerun the tool, this will activate the system and remove the problems showing under the WAT section.

Looks to me like your way behind on your updates as well, showing as W7 Not W7 SP1

Your licence is for a System Builder version so its not a problem, you may have to call your local MS ofiice
