Windows 7 Update Error: Service Registration Is Missing or Corrupt

Please help - I'm a newby with basic IT skills & my OS is not well...

My Windows 7 Ultimate x64 OS has recently started playing up, not able to find or download updates. I confess the last time I updated was late August & I rarely shut down - instead usually hibernate. Also sometimes windows explorer itself crashes: All folders & apps on desktop & bottom task-bar + my start menu disappear. Sometimes I can't right-click & get options & sometimes can't even bring up Task Manager!)

I ran WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab

After long wait during 'troubleshooting' it fixed some things but said:

"Service registration is missing or corrupt - NOT FIXED"

I again checked for updates, and Windows Update said there were no updates found:
Windows Update error 0x8024402C(2016-10-03-T-09_43_50P)
and then another time:
Windows Update Error code: 80248007

From research I know this problem is usually because of the incomplete or missing registry files, so I ran a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt - but strangely SFC drew a blank with no corrupt files found!

Clutching at straws I tried a few fixes I saw suggested on other threads:

I tried Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components.bat with no success. The Reset ran & cleared my update history & made whatever other changes to registry etc it does - but still didn't fix & allow updates.

I tried windows6.1-servicing-x64-5sep14_204d1fa1d4c28ecaa409b9d433b8d1bb9abe11a8.exe - which extracted to cabinet but nothing else seemed to happen.

Then I tried Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu + Windows6.1-KB3102810-x64.msu & Windows Standalone Installer said 'preparing installation" but failed with Installation Error 0x80080005

I also know from searching forums & Microsoft support that this problem has been encountered quite a few times since last year so if anyone can guide me through trouble-shooting & resolving this that would be greatly appreciated!

PS - in case it's a helpful clue, when I reboot computer & windows loads I get auto-run pop-up asking what application
I want to open a file called 'REGISTERED" with.

To be safe I chose Notepad & this is what it showed:

Ok Mick now can you please fill out the specs for the machine because there seems to be to me at least driver problem System Info - See Your System Specs

I personally like to see them in that bottom panel but whatever you want to do and the motherboard is not listed so that is one thing I would like to see.

and please do these
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2 > in safe mode if need be

I know you have done it but SFC usually best run for three scans

SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!
Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium
AdwCleaner Download
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans

Plus are you running any driver update programs or other tweaking software??

These are just for starters mate and may not come up with anything.
John

Hi Mick,
Its possible that the 2 problems are related.
But they are distinctly different.
BSOD
Update Failure.

My area is the Update side of things, but WE need to clear the BSOD(crash) problms first.
please follow the instructions here
Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions

Now when you >> finished << follow the instructions in the screenshot,

Thanks ICIT2LOL & torchwood - I'll work through your trouble-shooting steps & follow up. It may take me a few days as I also use this computer for work & with it mis-behaving I've got quite a back-log of work to get through too :/
