Our Samsung Laptop computer is attempting to install some windows 7 updates, and has been hung up for a few hours, with the screen reading "Do not power off or unplug your computer, installing 3 of 11 updates". What can I do to resolve this problem?

I am hesitant to tell you to turn off the computer and see if you can restart.
But, looks like you don't have another choice.

If you manage to reboot and logon, please try the followings...........

1. Windows Update - reset

Reset Windows Update Components
How do I reset Windows Update components?

2. Install system readiness tool and run it
What is system readiness tool ?
System resources, such as file data, registry data, and even in-memory data, can develop inconsistencies during the lifetime of the operating system. These inconsistencies might be caused by various hardware failures or might be caused by software issues. In some cases, these inconsistencies can affect the Windows servicing store, and they can cause software updates not to work. The System Update Readiness Tool tries to resolve these inconsistencies.
Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2
Note : make sure you pick the Win 7 for operating system and right bit-level. ( One for 32-bit, one for 64-bit ).

Re Updates installing, configuring..... often it can take a longish time.

IF after a reasonable time has expired & the process has not completed you may ultimately have to shut down the computer by holding down the power button.
