How to Use Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor​

   Information

This will show you how to download and use Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to get a report to see if your computer can run Windows 7. When the report is finished you will see which upgrade options are available and get guidance on fixing the system, program, and devices issues it finds before you install Windows 7.

   Note

Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor will run on the following 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems:

• Windows 7
• Vista
• XP with SP2
  • .NET 2.0 Framework or higher is required to be installed with XP.

   Warning

Before scanning your PC with the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, be sure to plug in and turn on any USB devices or other devices, such as printers, external hard disks, and scanners, that you regularly use with the PC you're checking.

Here's How:
1. Download and install Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

2. Plug in any USB devices or other devices such as printers, external hard drives, or scanners that are regularly used with the PC you're evaluating.
NOTE: This way they can be evaluated as well for compatibility with Windows 7.

3. Run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

4. You will see this for a moment while it checks for updates to the program. (See screenshot below)

5. Click on the Start check button. (See screenshot below)

6. It will now start checking your computer's compatibility. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: This may take a few minutes to complete.

7. When finished, you will see a report on which upgrade options are available and get guidance on fixing the system, program, and devices issues it finds before you install Windows 7. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: This example report below was from Vista SP2.

One question, does this tool also checks is your BIOS suitable for windows7 or not. I'm asking this because when i ran this tool on my lap top it did not show any issues, but on the manufacturer's site it is mentioned that this model (MSI EX705X-223EU) is not on their supported list for windows7. When I contacted customer support at MSI they told me that the BIOS is incompatible because of some file called SLIC2.1 that is missing from the BIOS file. I must say that I totally don't know what does this mean, so if someone could help me with this problem I will be very grateful. If it is at some help the BIOS is ver.6.07.

Hello Jocker, and welcome to Seven Forums.

While it does check hardware, it doesn't say anything about BIOS though. To be safe, I would update the BIOS to the latest version.

Thank you for your welcome, I installed win7 without any bigger problem. Although this tool stated no problems with the hardware, the build in bison webcam was not installed properly, but after manually installing the vista driver everything is OK. And I mean that I had to install only this driver manually, everything else was working properly without me having to install any driver.

So my advice to anyone owning this lap top is go for win7, it is working great .

Hello,

I'm running Vista 64Bit. I ran the upgrade advisor and many programs I have, including the Adobe suite of applications didn't show up on the advisor. Is there a problem or are they ok to go and need no uninstalling?

Also, I know it "recommends" you to uninstall certain programs. If you choose not to, what are the consequences?

Hello Jonathan, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I believe that the latest versions of the Adobe products have all worked fine in Windows 7. You might check at Adobe to see what they are compatible with to be safe though.

If the upgrade advisor recommends that you uninstall a program, then it's a pretty good ideal to do so. If you do not do so, then at best if you lucky, the program will just run in Windows 7. At worst, the program could prevent the installation of Windows 7 from finishing, or cause unknown issues with Windows 7 running properly.

So for the programs I have installed that Upgrade Advisor neither mentioned was safe nor need to be reinstalled, do I assume those are ok and need no uninstalling? Or would I have to individually check out each program to see its compatability with win 7 like I will do with Adobe?

To be safe, I would double check each program that Upgrade Advisor doesn't mention at their publisher's website to see if they are compatible with Windows 7. However, if they work in Vista, then they will usually work in Windows 7 as well. It's usually the utility type programs (ex: antivirus, all-one-tune up type, etc) that do not work properly unless they specifically support that OS.

The other upgrade tute's mention it too.

I suppose one could run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant as the system isn't really too different under the hood.

He he....I wonder if it's something to do with SSL3 - I think it's disabled now in FF. Will have to research how to turn it back on.

Yep - I downloaded a FF add-on called SSL Version Control and set it to minimum TLS 1.2 and that enables SSL v3 - restarted FF and now it works... Hopefully this will help others who may encounter the same difficulties. Trust Microsoft to use a questionable security mechanism for their downloads. Sigh. Thanks.
