Windows 7 Will Kill XP Ahead of Windows 8, It’s Just a Matter of Time

Don’t get me wrong, Windows XP is a real survivor, now at over 9 years on the market, and still the dominant operating system by far, with more than three times the usage share of the runner up, which is Windows 7.

And yet Windows XP is the past, Windows 7 the future. It’s just a matter of time. XP has already lost over 10% market share since Windows 7 was launched, even more than Windows Vista which is down only about half of that.

With 240 million licenses already sold and the holiday season just around the corner, Microsoft might just make it to the 300 million sold copies of Windows 7 by the end of the year.

The definition of 'kill' is a bit overrated. I know XP won't 'die' at least for another 5-10 yearsin my country where XP has been very popular. Windows 7 is just too much for an average machines here. Don't talk about the upgrades - it's difficult to do due to older hardware and getting new machines altogether is expensive and proven to be the biggest obstacle due to budget.

It will slowly fade away for sure though.

Why is there a push to "kill" XP in the first place? Greed? If everyone has to replace a reliable OS and working hardware to get windows 7 on new hardware that has a shorter lifespan or go without, how can it be anything else? Most people cannot afford windows 7 and the hardware to run it.

I dont think that is true people can't afford it they just can't afford the hard copy if any
Most people are buying new pc packages with 7 installed even 64 bit 7 laptops too

Just like everything else change takes time, it takes time to migrate into the direction everyone else is heading same with tape decks dvd's and now blu-ray

There is always a time when advancments in life cost a resonable amount of currency such as housing cars tv's etc but eventually it will become affordable and when people realize they have to get with the times they might end up being better off then someone who just went out and bought it right away

Most people who has or uses win 7 32 bit 64 bit is current with technology and pretty much like to stay current that's my 2 cents others rather wait till they have a real need

Well I do believe that Windows XP is the most used OS for Windows so far with Windows 7 coming in 2nd.
The problem upgrading to Windows 7 for a computer that is meant to run Windows XP is the hardware and the Windows 7 CD.
A lot of people assume that if you put in a Windows 7 on a computer that is meant to run an earlier version fo Windows they think that everything is going to be ok. They are in for quite a surprise when they find out that some of the hardware is eiter not compatible or not working peroid. Even though Windows 7 has been out for a while there are some bugs and glitches in the New OS.
Windows XP is a more reliable OS becuase of price, security, compatiblity, and peace of mind. Windows 7 has some nice features like, Windows Aero, Microsoft Live Essentials, better graphic capabilites , and can either be 32-bit or 64 bit(Windows Xp Pro not other versions) compatible. Windows XP will be around for a couple of more years before the reign of Windows 7 take over.

I think that many people, particularly those on a budget, get their new version of Windows when they purchase a new machine --- rather than just upgrading to the newest version on their old machine. That way it doesn't feel like they're paying money "out of their own pockets" for the new version, because it generally comes installed on the new machine. That's certainly how I moved from XP to Vista -- I had previously been using a PC utilizing XP, and then purchased a new laptop that had Vista installed on it. Otherwise, I'd still be using XP.

I agree with you except for "security". XP is hardly secure. I think the bottom line for home users is that they are comfortable with XP and the cost of upgrading - the cost of the OS and hardware to run it. For the business world, there are many cost related reasons to stay with XP.

If Windows 8 will be released on 2012, I don't think Windows 7 will kill XP before that. Yes, its just a matter of time but how long this time is uncertain to us all.

I mean, we still see people using Windows 2000 or even Windows 98 today that Windows 7 and Vista are dominating them in terms of technology. XP will die slowly and eventually reach a similar status that Windows 2000 and Windows 98 are currently in, but I believe we will still see people use Windows XP on 2015 onwards.
